I have been invited to a Ball, any ideas for a dress?

I am right at the beginning of a new relationship and he has asked me to accompany him to a Ball. I have never been to a Ball before and I have no idea what type of dress is suitable.

I don't want to turn up over dressed but I most certainly don't want to be under dressed either. Please help!

That dress is beautiful, thank you. I am not sure if he will know if a shorter dress would be acceptable because he isn't really a 'Ball' type person either.

Would I feel over dressed if I wore a long one and there were other women wearing shorter ones?

Are balls real?

wow.

I'm never sure what 'ball' means really.

In my (admittedly limited) experience it's more a disco where people make an effort to dress up. I would check if it has to be 'long' before you decide as that can be more limiting.

We go to one at Christmas but I don't always wear a long dress as I prefer shorter dresses(and you're more likely to wear them again) Also you can show off a fab pair of shoes too.

I've always chosen an 'evening' dress rather than anything long. Prom style will be fine most likely. He'll be in black tie, so dress up to match him!

I spent most of the day yesterday with 2 friends at House of fraser with their personal shopper getting dresses for a ball.

The best places are coast, Karen Millen and ted baker - all do lovely dresses both long and short.

I would steer away from long taffeta numbers, but any smart LBD or longer line dress will be fine. I would ask him for a bit more info on the location, reason etc general age group. Forcec ball tend to be far more formal and you could wear taffeta numbers, anything else I think you could wear long or short.
FWIW my 2 friends both got V chic strapless LBD's and I got a really long but quite fitted strapless long dress "i got this one" which looks hideous here but is really lovely on

The ball is a retirement ball of the principle of a college at the eden project. So I am guessing that there will be all different age groups there.

inmypants, that dress looks beautiful too. Thank you for giving me ideas on what to wear and where to find them.

I have to go DD is wanting to go into town but I wil catch up with this thread later.

Thank you

Hi,

My husband has just left the Army at the beginnign of April. I have been to many balls with the Army and also local balls. I tend to wear an A line dress as this suits my shape and have a shawl that covers my shoulders. I bought this dress for my husbands dining out. I got a 10% military discount. Had a fantastic night and lots of compliments on my dress.
