Going to Royal Ascot in June on the saturday and have grandstand tickets. I need some advice on what to wear! I dont think Ill but anything new cause my wardrobe is bulging as it is.. but I would like some dress code tips as i've never been.

On the webiste it just says 'smart' but Ive read and heard elsewhere about unwriten rules about knee length skirts, spagetti straps etc. I am terrified of making a faux pas! Help!

Any advice for DP would be greatfully received as well!

The royal enclosure is the one with the strict dress code - and you certainly can't wear shorter than knee length skirts there or have your shoulders or tummy uncovered. Plus hats are a must in there.

However - people in the other enclosures usually do wear strappy tops - so I can't see it being a problem.

Technically you are supposed to not have bare legs in the royal enclosure (ie. you must wear tights) not matter how hot it is! That is an unwritten rule... see here

Ah great thanks! We're in the Grandstand bit which I beleive is 'posher' than silver ring but not as posh as Royal..?

The link was very helpful! So tights, covered shoulders, a hat... and not a bare tummy (this shouldnt be a problem since stomach hasnt seen light of day in about 5 years..!

Have you got any nice dresses??

BigBadMummy · 10/05/2010 21:49

You don't need to worry about the dress code to much in the Grandstand, basically it just means no jeans.

Do not wear high heels. People forget that it is a horse race. On grass. And high heels on grass sink. so you will end up carrying them.

And if you like Pimms or Champagne and have a winning day make sure you wear big knickers so when you fall over you don't flash your fanjo .

And it is June in England, so take a cardy.

I go every year and it always makes me laugh the number of women that have clearly dressed with no thought for the fact that they will be outside watching horses essentially.

And you certainly do not need a hat in the Grandstand on Saturday. Nor do you need the covered shoulders / tights bit. That is just the Royal Enclosure.

Shall we have a MN meet up?!

I go every year too (not this year tho as will be size of whale by then!) and I 100% agree about the heels!

Is either boiling hot or freezing - so I always wear something that has layers to allow for odd weather.

Also there is alot of walking around - unless you sitting in a box all day! So unless you are good in heels - that is another reason to opt for comfort!

It really is only the royal enclosure that has a strict dress code - you'll be fine. Most people do dress up a bit tho!

Would love to big bad mummy!! And thanks for the advice. I do have a dress in mind its coral and I actually have some coral pumps that I had considered but wasnt sure if flats would do.. Thinking now that theyd be perfect!

Will prob wear tights anyway to keep the old saddlebags in shape!

And maybe a pash to keep the chill out.

I think irrigardless of where you are at the races it's fun to dress up.
What about a dress with a little matching jacket?
No stilettos as you will sink in the grass.
How about Phase 8. They do race-y type clothes. I actually bought my dress from M&S last year and I was in the Royal Enclosure.
