i know it's meant to be in household/diy, but that sounds so bleuughhh.

but i want it to be stylish and beautiful, so i'm putting it here!!!

two main areas: hallway (3 floors up, top is lightest, and bottom two quite dark, dado rail half way up all the way, carpet is black/beigeycream thin striped, but might need replacing as think the builders have totalled it so don't pay too much attention to that. in the ground floor hall the floor is travertine like this, the premium travertine )

and big open plan living/dining/kitchen area.
floor is big 610x 610 travertine (as above) tiles. kitchen is white painted wood, but modern (handleless, matt).

have my farrow and ball paint chart next to me and am looking for advice from stylish mners.

am toying with a taupey (light though) colour in the living area, or the hall. or white (not v practical?).

pale blue? too cold? grey? i do LOVE grey, love grey clothes, love love love grey. but grey? really? as a highlight? grey under dado, white above? too harsh. grey on one wall and white rest in the living space?

whatdayathink?

i'd go for green/ grey in the living area, its warmer than grey or white and very restful. you could do 3 walls in a lighter shade and one in a darker one?
some nice suggestions here

and for the hallway what about these mocha/ hot choc/ pale mauve brownish type ones here

what do you think?

Heathcliffscathy · 09/05/2010 22:53

thanks ninja...don't really want to go with browns...leaning towards greys at the moment: cornforth white in the main area...lamproom grey under dado in hallway...

We have a soft grey that we balance with rich colours round the house. Gold, deep blues, greens etc as highlights.

It's your house, do what you love.

honie · 09/05/2010 22:55

Should say, walls grey, cusions/picture frames/mirrors highlight the colour 'flashes'.

kickassangel · 09/05/2010 23:08

do you want to keep the dado rail? (a bit 80s/90s to me?)

what colour is the travertine?

could you do a soft grey/mauve colour (sort of 'dove' colour?) then have a some darker grey & aubergine accents?

are you painting the walls yourselves, or getting it done? how good are you at straight line? you could do a light grey colour, with a dark grey & aubergine stripe (narrow) running just below ceiling height which wraps all the way to the top of the house.

kickassangel · 09/05/2010 23:15

so, looking at their charts, i was thinking cornforth white, pigeon & pelt.

hard to tell on the internet.

have you got space to do some big dramatic mirrors to bring more light into the lower staircases?

OooohWhatIfItHurts · 10/05/2010 10:37

I have Elephant's Breath under my dado rail in our hallway - a nice grey/taupe colour which has a little warmth to it. Love it. And a random creamy colour above.

Dado rails rock if they are original features in period houses.

kickassangel · 10/05/2010 20:49

aaah, original features, yes. i like.
seriously, the names they give paints - you did realise how bizarre the first part of your answer sounded?

Alouiseg · 10/05/2010 20:51

The best neutral/base i've found is Almond White by Dulux.

I'm still looking for the perfect Cotswold green for the render on the exterior of my house. If anyone knows of one?

Heathcliffscathy · 10/05/2010 22:25

it is original feature

we're now thinking that maybe we should go with one colour up and down and white dado in between.

the testers i got today were:

cornforth white, skimming stone, charleston grey (much more brown in this one).

will see what they look like
