Epilating problems - how do I avoid red bumps and ingrowing hairs?

I bought a Braun Epilator. One of the more expensive ones, that you can use wet or dry. I really liked it after the first few goes, don't mind the discomfort. But have now developed red bumps on my legs and some ingrowing hairs.

Can anyone please share their tips on how to get the best results with an epilator please?

I know it doesn't help you find a solution, but I went back to shaving, because of red bumps and ingrown hairs.

Hope someone has an answer, because I liked the results otherwise

I thought epilator was the best thing in the world for smoothy legs, but I too suffered severe ingrown hairs, I had them all up and down my legs. I think that constant exfoliation might help a litte but to be honest I had them for many months and struggled very badly with them. I tried every know cure I could find, even this kind of aspirin based ingrown hair cure called tendskin and another called PFBvanish, and quite a few others. I have to say that after I had squeezed them all out I had many scars and I ended up letting the hairs grow out on my legs, that was about 4/5 years ago and now I only use cream on my legs to remove the hairs, and I don't have any ingrown problems.
I think the problem occurs because the hair is removed under the skin level and when it grows back in, it has a sharper tip and can curl back into itself/skin when growing back in, hence the ingrown effect. Maybe you could keep exfoliating every day with a roughish wash mitt to try and discourage them? Or to at least remove the excess skin that is on top of them. Picking them out or squeezing them only makes it worse, but if you can 'free' the hair and keep scrubbing away the dead skin you might just rescue one and not have a massiv inflamed bump.
good luck x

Every year I get my epilator out and every year I give up a few weeks later as my legs look like I have chicken pox . I have tried exfoliating etc but nothing works. It's pretty gutting really as I have quite hairy arms and in the summer like to epilate as I feel like a really hairy ape. I think if you have that type of hair it's probably inevitable.
