-am i too old at 30 to wear certain things...?

i love fashion and always have done but i am wondering whether some things are a bit -too- trendy for someone of my age, i know 30 isn't "old" but i wonder if i should tone my look down, esp as i am a mum of two little DC, aged 1 and 4!

here is an example of what i wore today, i thought i looked good - but what got me thinking is i saw a couple of teenage girls giving me dirty looks as i walked past, and i remember doing similar things myself when i saw "grown ups" trying to be trendy! anyway, i had leather slouchy boots (calf length, faded grey/black) with denim hotpants (i have good legs i promise!) with a white, kind of loose, topshop vest with the number 7 on it teamed with a black leather biker jacket (topshop) and i have a black Balenciaga motorcyle bag.

i have a pretty decent figure, am only a size 8 (6 in some things) and i keep toned with pilates and swimming.

i love everything from places like topshop, H&M, new look, miss selfridge but lately i have felt really old shopping there

honest opinions please! i am not ready to blend in to the crowd just yet

Bollocks to that. Sounds as if you look great . If I wore that outfit (38 with the dress size to match!) then I would expect dirty looks.

ABitBatty · 05/05/2010 19:57

They were probably just jealous .

I think maybe bare legs and denim hotpants are a bit ott though, but that is only my opinion and I am not as stylish as you sound

compo · 05/05/2010 19:59

you sound very rocky chicky?
I know I couldn't carry that off but i am size 16
you go girl!

mountainmonkey · 05/05/2010 19:59

You're never too old as long as you're wearing things you like and feel comfortable in. I'm gonna be 30 next year and I still shop in those kind of places.

Sounds fine to me!
I am 38 and still try my best to keep up, dont always succeed.
I thought maybe the other day I looked a bit 'mutton' in my black jeggings, converse and baggy vest top.
But most of the time i just think sod it, wear what you like.

iamfabregasted · 05/05/2010 20:11

super - for a night out with mates the other night i wore

ripped skinnies
high black boots (FMB's to the max)
bryan adams black t-shirt
black boyfriend jacket

I'm 40. Size 10

When u are forty you will realise that you should wear what the hell you like, life is too short! unlike my skirts lol

However, my mother and her dress sense, now that is a whole different story lol

hellymelly · 05/05/2010 20:12

How can you be too old at 30? Wear what the hell you like.

compo · 05/05/2010 20:13

'When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves'

PersonalClown · 05/05/2010 20:18

I plan to be like the woman I saw today.
She must have been at least 60 and in bootcut jeans with braided hems, big chunky boots, a jersey wrap dress and a faux sheepskin jacket!

I plan to be in converse when I'm 60!

bowbluebell · 05/05/2010 21:11

Sounds like you look pretty cool to me. And let's be honest, when you are north of thirty, it's not what you wear, but how you wear it. I know some fifty year olds who look amazing (I'm thinking of my PhD tutor, who can silence a room with one wiggle of her leather clad bottom)

Having said that, I look back at what I wore at uni when I was 18 and I was so bloody square, just because I didn't have the confidence to wear something more interesting and sexy. Fast forward to 32, and I've just bought my first pair of converse and feel like I'm finally finding a style that's 'me' (a heady mixture of posh Italian leather, tweed and novelty hosiery...)

Biscuitbreaker · 05/05/2010 22:52

The teens were probably looking at you in utter jealousy - do you remember being a teenage girl? It is shit and filled with insecurities! Enjoy!

chiccadee · 05/05/2010 22:56

Will probably get flamed for this. Nothing to do with age but to me hot pants and bare legs say 'hooker', however good your figure. Sorry.

gtamom · 06/05/2010 07:31

You are still a spring chicken at 30.
The only time it is inappropriate to wear a certain outfit is when the outfit doesn't suit the occasion itself.

Bare legs in hot weather are ok, but I don't wear short shorts in public since I was about 25. Perhaps ripped skinny jeans would be a good choice rather than the shorts, or some tights underneath? But really a lot has to do with where you live (hot places like Spain or Miami people wear less!) and the occasion.

You probably did look sexy, but perhaps a bit too sexy for walking down the road though!

Bonsoir · 06/05/2010 07:37

Sounds just fine, OP. Enjoy your youth and your figure while you can! 30 is a fab, fab age.

bellissima · 06/05/2010 10:17

Another one who thinks you are a spring chicken. My mother used to say no strapless dresses over 25 . I think we have moved on.

Having said that, when I look at 80s photos of my teenage and twenty-something self in little ra-ra skirts and polka-dot tops, I do rather think that they would have been more suited to a 12 year old. But that says rather more about the awfulness of the style (and my taste! ).

superv1xen · 06/05/2010 15:22

thanks for being so nice (mostly ;) )

i had steeled myself for hearing loads of "yes, you are too old!!" replies, so its really nice to see quite a few people think its still ok for me to attempt to be fashionable
