Every night. They dig into my neck and wake me up if I wear them in bed. Perhaps I have very thin earlobes or something

CatJosephine · 04/05/2010 23:23

I remove them every night but only get them cleaned once a year.

solo · 04/05/2010 23:26

I take mine out when I wash my hair so that I can give my ears a good rub. I just make sure the earrings are not clogged up before replacing them. So, once a week for mine.

Amandoh · 05/05/2010 00:23

I take them out at night too as they dig in if I lay on my side.

I clean them with a little toothpaste and a soft toothbrush every couple of days or so to keep them sparkly.

If I took mine out every day/night, I'd forget to put them back.

NathanBarley · 05/05/2010 03:06

i left stud earrings in for about 2 years! they were a bit yuck when i took them out though. couldn't be bothered to remove every day though. i think once a week to clean is more than enough.

marenmj · 05/05/2010 05:00

ooo, clearly a slob over here

I wear tiny silver hoops that aren't meant to be opened frequently - took me forever to hunt a pair down in the UK. They are designed for body jewelry and would be ruined if I mess with them too much, so I just rub them a bit when I am in the shower.

I used to wear earrings made for ears but developed a bit of an allergy when I was pregnant, and now that DD is a toddler and pulls on shiny things, it's a hazard

I know the gunk you're talking about though. I used to get that on my earrings, but it stopped after I was electrocuted a few years back with my jewelry in. The sites around all my body jewelry was badly burnt, so you could say my results aren't typical

I don't get the earrings cleaned as they don't have hinges or parts, and the silver stays untarnished since it's in contact with my skin. Works out pretty well for a busy mum.

agedknees · 05/05/2010 18:02

I clean my earrings with half a steradent tablet mixed with hot water. Gets all the bits out (if you know what I mean).

Do not use on pearl earrings though!!!!!

MayorNaze · 05/05/2010 18:05

oh gosh are you supposed to clean earrings?

i have mny pairs that i change daily but 2 hoops that i keep in all the time...am i going to get gross ear fungussy things...?

EldonAve · 05/05/2010 18:07

remove every night
never clean them

MrsMeow · 05/05/2010 19:10

marenmj off topic I know, but that's very scary! How were you electrocuted? I'm glad you're ok, and have no gunky piercing holes as a bonus! I was electrocuted once (stupid idiot, I was wearing wet rubber gloves and put my hand in the toaster to lift it and clean under it!) it wasn't that bad, but it threw me across the kitchen!

I clean my stud earrings sometimes when I wash my hair, so a couple of times a week, not religiously though, dirty slattern I am! I have a tiny silver hoop in the top of my left ear though that I don't remember ever cleaning. I've had it in for about 14 years It doesn't seem to need cleaning though, I guess just washing my ear does the trick!

marenmj · 05/05/2010 19:40

MrsMeow typically, twas me being an idiot . I was doing a bit of DIY and had shut off the electricity to the wrong room as the fuses were mis-labelled by the previous house owner and I didn't test before I started

I was lucky, as I had a pinky brushing the ground-wire, so the current was able to leave my body with minimal damage. My fillings in my teeth "hummed" for a few hours and I had the burns around my jewelry, but that was it. I was lucky

My earrings are probably similar to your little hoop. I was told that if I didn't wear something in my body piercings they would eventually close, but none of the ones I had in when I was shocked have ever closed or shrunk, despite leaving my jewelry out, sometimes for years at a time

MrsMeow · 05/05/2010 20:03

How frightening! It just shows how easy something like that can happen, doesn't it? I read years after my shock that you should always seek medical advice, even after a tiny shock, as it can disrupt your hearts rhythm or something. Cue another panic from me, until DH reminded me that it was about 5 years earlier I'd been shocked!

The hoops probably are the same - mine is a body piercing one too, it has a little hinge on. I used to wear one very similar in my nose when I was younger and could get away with it!
