Nails - Files and a solution to flaking?

RedBlueRed · 03/05/2010 23:18

My nails can flake off in layers to almost half way down and i can't seem to find a solution.

I have tried numerous lotions and potions and none seem to have an effect.

I have purchased a glass file to see if that will keep them in check as I find the sand paper ones too harsh and the emery boards wear out with hardly any useage.

Has anyone found anything they would recommend?

Hi, I'm just trying to solve the same problem. My nails seem to have got worse and worse since my second DC was born.

I've also just invested in a glass nail file, and it does seem to help.
I was trying OPI Nail Envy, but have given it up in favour of Sally Hansen Hard as Wraps. I'm hoping it will hold the nails together for just long enough for the damage to grow past my fingertips instead of flaking down into the nail itself. And then, just maybe, I can break the cycle of flaking and damage to my nails.

Good luck - please let me know if you come up with any brilliant solutions.

Do you wear rubber gloves religiously when doing household chores involving any sort of cleaning product?

RedBlueRed · 03/05/2010 23:31

I do actually Bonsoir, infact I use the heavy duty black ones.

pip I used to have such strong healthy nails before ds, they are just a mess now.

Hate to state the obvious but water is the main culprit in my case.
So when I was changing lots of nappies/wiping/faces/high-chairs/giving daily baths my nails always suffered.

Likewise now I have 2 cases of nits in the house so am back to nit-combing with resultant flaky nails.

I'd be interested to see if there is a solution as obviously you can't wear rubber gloves when dealing with the DCs.

I made the mistake of going for a lovely relaxing manicure a couple of months ago (40th birthday treat). I think it pushed my nails over the edge from dry and tatty, to seriously disintegrating. It has happened once before after a manicure - so I think I'll have to avoid them in future.

I've also begun to get patches of dermetitis (sp?) on my hands since having children - so I have to use rubber gloves when using cleaning products.

Ds is 10 so I haven't touched a nappy for a long while. I work in an office so no real water probs there either.

Good luck with those nits, its such a grind to get rid of them.
