Can anything be done with my buggered skirt?

I had a fabulous a-line skirt, lined, in a kitch, japaneseish print with a wide band of clashing print fabric at the bottom. Knee length.

Lost weight and a friend offered to take it in for me. It came back a perfectly fitted... pencil skirt . With a kick flap thingy at the back.

It just doesn't work as a pencil skirt. It's bloody tight too.

If it weren't for the already contrasting fabric at the bottom I would maybe have put 2 triangles of ribbon or fabric at the sides to re-A-line it, a la diy bell bottoms of the 70s. But with the 2 busy fabrics already a 3rd, even plain, just wouldn't work.

But I loved it so much.

Is there anything that can be made from a pencil skirt? A sun top for me maybe? A dress for dd? I can't bear for it to sit in the wardrobe ignored for ever.

has she still got the extra material? I'd try and get that back for starters and then maybe go from there

MrsMiamla · 02/05/2010 08:49

could the lining be used for the side inserts? i suspect there wouldn't be enough fabric for a top for you. You could almost certainly make a dress for your DD from it though.

Or, you could pinch the wide band from the bottom for the inserts? you'd obviously end up with a shorter skirt though

does your friend have the fabric she removed still?

a photo would help...

Would you consider adding knitted panels at the sides? Perhaps with a contrasting fabric you could get away with it.

oldbea · 02/05/2010 10:14

She says she doesn't have the fabric.

I hadn't thought of using the lining. Will investigate.

Will have a think about how it would look with the band as inserts too... not sure.

Don't think knitted would work - it's quite a summery skirt.

Thanks for the thoughts so far. Will try and get a pic...

How old is dd? If she's a baby you could easily make her a little dress from it.

oldbea · 02/05/2010 10:23

Dd is 4 and there is enough fabric to make a little sun dress.

But... she has HUNDREDS of fab little dresses and I had ONE fabulous skirt. And she won't appreciate it like I did. I'm just bellyaching really. I know she'll probably end up with it. Sigh. Back to my old rags and tatters.

Could you buy a plain fabric and make a skirt with that using the kitch and clashing print fabrics as panels or a wide band at the bottom?

I'd love to see a photo as it sounds really interesting

Cthulhu · 02/05/2010 10:35

How about making it into a cushion cover?

Cthulhu · 02/05/2010 10:35

Or a bag?

We saw some Desigual stuff yesterday which might give you an idea of what to do. They use lots of panels of different fabrics in their stuff.

If you look at the last thumbnail on the third row down you will see what they do with skirts.

Hope you can salvage something and enjoy your skirt again.

Oooh I love Desigual. I wore a red Desigual dress over Christmas.
