Roseaca, can I get anything from the chemist?

bishboschone · 29/04/2010 21:14

I have had roseaca symptoms for as long as I can remember. I wear foundation every day so I don't think about it that much but it is starting to upset me. I don't do doctors so I will only go if I have to . Is there anything I can do or buy at a chemist? I hardly drink , eat very heathily and exercise.

I would see your gp. Im not experienced etc with it but feel your gp may be able to help, not sure if treatment available/about but maybe something is available on nhs for treatment or for make up to disgusie..?

AnyFucker · 29/04/2010 21:18

I use Zineryt which is a lotion you put on with a roller-thingy

It is colourless, so you can't see it

It makes your eyes water for a few seconds though !

It is a topical mixture of zinc and erythromycin, which is an antibiotic

It keeps my rosacea away...very effective but I think it depends how bad it is

I only have the redness and slight bumpiness on my nose...I think it would be loads worse though if I didn't use Zineryt

I sympathise x

AnyFucker · 29/04/2010 21:19

sorry, meant to say, it is only available on prescription

bishboschone · 29/04/2010 21:22

Thankyou anyf , it is redness on my cheeks. I have become a master of disguise and no one except my dh knows about it. I fear going to doc s because I will have to take my make up off!

aww, bish, don't be daft, don't you think your doctor has seen much, much worse than your make-up-free face ??

imagine all the sights a GP sees in a day ! < shudders >

your slightly red, slight bumpy face will be light relief, I promise you !

the thing about rosacea is...it will get worse, not better (without proper treatment)

and covering up with make-up will not be helping

shhhh · 29/04/2010 21:29

I wouldn't worry about your doc seeing you make up free...

im sure he's seen more embarassing that a make up free face .

(not meaning to make out its not a big deal as obviously to you it is...)

How about removing your make up once in with the doc and then after going to the toilet to reapply..?

IMO if you never go out minus make up because of this then would seek help.

I never/don't went make up free, because I guess im quite vain BUT on occasions I do (swimming etc) so I guess you are not alone...

bishboschone · 29/04/2010 21:30

Oh, I didn't realise it will get worse , maybe I will go . I agree that my face could do with getting some fresh air on it but I just couldn't go out without make up.

bish...you can use make-up on top of Zineryt

once it dries (in a few seconds) it is non-greasy and colourless

over a few weeks of treatment I bet you would need less make-up anyway

please see your doctor

bishboschone · 29/04/2010 21:33

I never go swimming in this country because of it. I am not so much worried about the doctor seeing me but embarrass ed I am too vain to leave my make up off.

AnyFucker · 29/04/2010 21:33

will you make an appointment tomorrow and then tell us when you have done it

bishboschone · 29/04/2010 21:34

Anyf, what does the drug do?

OP posts:
bishboschone · 29/04/2010 21:35

I have to work tom, I have Tuesdays off so I will be brave and go then, if you think it will be worth it.

See the GP. Its what they are there for, and this is a bog-standard condition.

The first thing I was prescribed was Metrogel - which is effective but seems to be physically incompatible with sunscreen or makeup which is hardly ideal, so I really wouldn't recommend it. So after that I've had Rozex cream and then Finacea (Azaelic acid IRRC). They are all antibiotics of one form or another.

good luck!

bishboschone · 29/04/2010 21:38

Thanks Grimm a

AnyFucker · 29/04/2010 21:38

I do think it will be worth it

It isn't a drug as such...it is a topical (applied to skin) treatment that reduces the redness and bumpiness

have a look here

GrimmaTheNome · 29/04/2010 21:39

If you're that worried, wear your makeup, take some cleanser and wipe off a bit to show your skin, then reapply in the loos afterwards

bishboschone · 29/04/2010 21:44

I would do that grimma but I think it is a bit embarrasing

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 29/04/2010 21:47

bish...make an early morning appointment

don't put your make-up on

your GP has to see your skin to diagnose you properly

it will be ok

and you will wish you did it a long time ago

bishboschone · 29/04/2010 21:50

(breaks out into cold sweat) yes that is a good idea

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 29/04/2010 22:03

come back and tell us how you get on

bishboschone · 30/04/2010 07:31

I had roseaca for a number of years - I tried everything from creams and pills prescribed by the doctor to changing my diet. Nothing really worked.

However, one day as an experiment I decided not to use any leave in hair styling product - no frizz taming gels, hairspray etc. I have never had a problem with roseaca since. I'm pretty sure where my hair had contact with my face was causing a reaction. Perhaps your skin is reacting to your makeup - perhaps leaving it off for a while or trying another brand as an experiment will help (my skin even reacted to Nivea cleansing milk once - which burned my forehead).

Hope this helps as I understand how upsetting roseaca can be.

Ooh thank you, I also have very curly hair so I not sure I could leave product pit of my hair but I could straighten it for a week to try . I do change my male up but my biggest fear is not having it on so although I know it would be a good idea , o not sure I couldc do it .

You know all that chemical product does sometimes cause reactions - give it a try for a week or two just to see if it improves.
