Good idea or precursor to midlife crisis?

Split up with husband nine months ago. I recently started thinking of all the things that I had perhaps missed out on when I was in my 20s by being sensible, getting married etc. So have started making a list of everything I would like to do (serious and silly) before I hit 35. One of the things is getting a tattoo. I'm not talking about a majorly big tattoo but a small lotus flower right at the base of my spine so I can easily cover it up. It would only be visible when either naked or wearing a bikini (chances of that with my post baby stomach are slim ) so it really would be for my own eyes (unless I were to meet someone else that I was willing to share it with )

Not sure where this idea came from as I am normally ms ultra conservative.

So, good idea or should I admit that I am heading towards a midlife crisis?

Honestly, I don't think a tattoo is a good idea. Esp at the base of the spine (connotations of "tramp stamp"). although the ever stylish Kate Moss has a pair of wings at the base of her back. Why not try something less permanent to begin w ie less conservative clothes and hair?

Agree totally with bunny.

I am not a tattoo fan though - get experimenting with hair and clothes.

Ha ha, Tracey, just agreed w you on another thread!

Thank you, you are starting to make me see sense but I think secretly there is a bit of me that wants to be a little bit trampy and rebellious having been so conservative for so long. If it was a man saying this then I would be saying it is screaming midlife crisis!

Have already done the hair and clothes overhaul and embarked on diet/ gym program so losing weight and feeling pretty confident about my body now (other than southward facing boobs and crinkly stomach).

Any suggestions as to how I can unleash my inner tramp in a less permanent/ potentially embarassing way?

i say go for it if you want to! i have 3 tattoo's and i love them. (i am 30 btw)

honeydragon · 27/04/2010 18:07

I don't think its trampy, if it is something you will think about whilst having a dreary day and then smile as you know its there and no one else does then do it!

I am total trash according to a certain group of mums out there as I have my kids names tatooed upon my person apparantly marking me forever more as a chav - and I don't give a hoot - I like em!

whirlygig · 27/04/2010 18:40

I think it's a lovely gift to yourself to celebrate your new found body confidence. Don't worry about the 'tramp stamp' reference. You don't need another inner critic. It's only for you and people who are special to you to know, if you wish.

I got one when I was 40... It's on the top of my left bum cheek. Only visible when I'm naked or when I have v skimpy bikini on (no longer a likelihood as have since had DD). I really like mine but I do wonder what it'll look like when I'm 70... Not that I'll be able to see it, I imagine.

Acanthus · 27/04/2010 18:46

You won't be able to see it at the base of your spine - if it's just for you, put it somewhere you can see it! BUt I think you'll regret it, tbh.

superv1xen · 27/04/2010 22:06

i must be a chav then as two of my tatts are of my kids names! (the other one is the led zeppelin symbol)

i LOVE mine and am PROUD of them

ameliameerkat · 27/04/2010 22:06

Do remember that it will be there forever! (rather obvious, I know.....)

I never realised how many people have tattoos until I joined a gym last year and saw lots of partially naked ladies in the changing rooms. Definitely more than 50% of the 20 - 45 age bracket have them. It does make them feel a bit less special somehow, and that's coming from someone who has 2 herself!
