Size 14
Very very fat tummy that needs hiding
Dont like showing my legs

've been living in my Uttam knee length woolly dress, but its getting too hot!!

Anyone reccommend a dress that really does look flattering on this shape?! I can google, but its not the same as knowing someone has experienced it!

I am size 14 and have a fat tummy due to 4 kids!. Surprisingly Matalan have some really nice wrap dresses, one in blue and one in red cream mix.I wore one for my daughters party and the other mums thought it was from Monsoon as is so pretty.Alternatively try the ditsy maxi dress which is also very flattering-on the website,i couldn't find it in RL.

luciemule · 26/04/2010 14:13

I actually think a more structured, good quality material (thinking Monsoon), might hold in your tummy more. Is it upper or lower tummy that worries you most?

luciemule · 26/04/2010 14:15

bit like this and pattern will hide big tummy

luciemule · 26/04/2010 14:18

if you have a bigger tummy and wear long and floaty, you could look pregnant. Think 1950s I think - a bit like Holly Willoughby. she wears clothes that make the most of her shape.

SuSylvester · 26/04/2010 14:18

id say go on a diet first.
worked for me

luciemule · 26/04/2010 14:21

hmm - cutting out white bread and white pasta could make a big difference but if it's down to having 4 children, I assumed you meant your lower tummy was what you didn't like.

luciemule · 26/04/2010 14:22

wouldn't something like this not be flattering for a bigger tum?

teta · 26/04/2010 14:37

I don't know whether mustrunmore has 4 kids but i do!.Yes cutting out carbs does help.I have been on the Food Doctor diet for 1 week and lost 2 kilos and it is easy to follow.I like the green dress but i prefer natural fabrics as i spend alot of time in v.hot/humid countrys.Secondly I have 3 very young kids so semi-disposable clothes are the way to goAnyhow this is complete topic divergence!.Mustrunmore i hope you find something you like.

Downdog · 26/04/2010 15:30

I'm bigger than you - more 18.
Currently making one of these here in bright silk.

might finish it tonight! I'm excited.

luciemule · 26/04/2010 19:07

downdog that dress is so beautiful. You must be very clever - I'm terrible at sewing but it is something I wish I could do better. That dress is lovely.
Sorry Teta - I thought it was the OP who had 4 kids - then realised it was you.

mustrunmore · 27/04/2010 08:10

Yeah, thanks for that SuSylvester . The thing is, I want something to make me feel less depressed and a bit more positive until I can get back into training again. This time last year I was back to my prekids weight and v happy as I was back to running about 16km at a time. But personal problems, illness for all of us in sucession, and lack of babysitting friends meant that I didnt train from November till about a month ago [sad). If I dont train minimum 1.5hrs every day, I gain; I've put 2 stone back on.
Sorry, my OP didnt make it clear that I'm not a lazy bint who wants to look thin without effort. I just want to feel good, just once, until I get back into things.

I got a wrap dress from ebay to use for school; its very nice, as long as I only look front-on, so I need to wear a cardy to hide the side profile.

Luciemule, I love the 50s style dresses, cant find any cheap that arent bad quality and hang funny tho!

And OMG downdog, you can make stuff like that?

Downdog · 27/04/2010 09:30

Well still making it! didn't get anything done last night - but yes, but this dress isn't very difficult - only 4 pattern pieces in this dress & a little patience (the dress I originally thought I would make for this wedding turned out to have 22 pattern pieces x 2.5 as it was lined & underlined - technically I could have made it, but I don't have the space to be organised enough for that kind of endeavour). I'm not a fantastic seamstress, but taking my time with this one as it's silk! and lined with silk too.

I do enjoy it, but it's hard to find the time as usually by the time I've done a day in the office, DD bath, book & bed, my dinner etc I'm ready to vege out rather than switch on & sew. Plus I only have the tiniest sewing space in living room after I push the computer to one side. Can't wait until this dress is finished.

It's nice to have a creative outlet & perfect way to spend some of those many nights 'in'. Plus I can adapt pattern if I need to so hopefully it will fit well. The pleat in the front of this one, plus the fact that it is lined will skim over every lump & bump while flowing beautifully (I hope!)

teta · 27/04/2010 10:33

Mustrunmore i know how you feel.I also have very little time to exercise as my dh is working away and it is difficule to find a babysitter who can cope with 4 kids.I only have a certain amount of success with online shopping-maybe if you are size 10 most things look ok.The thing that works for me is to go to M&S and try lots of things on-leave a couple of hours, sans kids so you can find what shapes suit you or alternatively TK Maxx is brilliant.I find there are lots of continental brands that hang better than uk makes.I don't know whether you need clothes for work or SAHM clothes?.Also try tesco online and warehouse outlet online as there are some good clothes for my shape.Hope this helps.

mustrunmore · 27/04/2010 10:46

I always find Tescos sizes are v odd.
Yes, I agree I need a huge try-on session, but its so depressing to think of it! Not my idea of a good day out!

Ok, today I'm wearing a LaRedoute 'top' which is actually knee length, black, scoopy neck, with trackie bottoms (only cos I'm at home; wouldnt mix and match like that in public!), and a wide belt . Kinda working ok cos its all black, and the belt is tight so makes me not eat

teta · 28/04/2010 09:41

Sounds good!.I LOVE shopping - how can you not like it?.Come to think of it the only thing I have got from tescos is a petite jumper dress in the sale - got 4 of them as very good fit with leggings and little girls dresses which are very cute.I am debating about getting the waterfall linen waistcoat at the moment but will wait until the next offer comes in [and see what is in last years summer wardrobe where I probably have one of everything already!]

mustrunmore · 28/04/2010 14:16

Maybe its old age creeping up! I used to love shopping. I'd much rather be in a second hand bookshop, or out running Shopping for clothes is better when your the right size too
