Tried on a lovely dress today but DD told me I looked like a fat aging hippy.

She then told me that M&S is for grandmothers.

What is a somewhat curvy, slightly woo, bit windswept, mid 30s, girl supposed to wear.

I only ever wear jeans or linen trousers and T-shirts or tunic tops. I'd like something pretty for a change.

Link the dress, and stop taking your DD shopping with you.

Was a pretty floaty number with stretchy gathered top bit, probably meant to be worn with leggings (but not on my legs)

I've been doing the fat-aging-hippy look for some time.

Were we not supposed to? Bugger, I think I missed the memo...

Is your daughter a teenager?

If so their main purpose is to slag off their mother's clothing choices.

I bought a new pair of jeans today, amd wearing it with a white vest top and a denim jacket.

DD just curled her lip when she looked at me.

I (defensively) said 'double denim is in'.

She said 'yes it may be mum but you still look like a groover'.

She also said that I look like Bruce Willis in Die Hard in my white vest.

My self esteem in in tatters.

horrible child. poncing around in her size 6 shot shorts. she'll be sorry when she turns into me when she hits 30. and then i'll laugh.

Link to dress? And what does 'slightly woo' mean?

I picked up a skirt in M&S once and commented that I quite liked it. DD1, who was about 12 at the time, sighed and said, 'Mother, I'm sorry but it looks like something that ladies in walking sandals would wear in the Lake District. Just walk away."

After that I insisted on 'If you can't say something nice, don't say anything' and she has now developed a very expressive 'silent face' used mainly in M&S and Clarks!

You see Deborah thats why I'm not doing double denim - too easy to look like Bev Callard.

Eccentrica - I suspect your DD was right regarding that dress. Stretchy/gathered top bit is not sounding good or flattering - you should get her to choose you something.

Janeite - love your DD's description and Debo's.

EccentricaGallumbits · 24/04/2010 19:41
