What's that classic 30s style bob called? Do you think I can give toddler DD one myself?

Does anyone know what I mean? It's slanted forwards and often includes a heavy fringe. There's a child in The Hours who has one. It's a look I love but I'm not sure how do-able it is for the amateur hairdresser!

ATM DD has a standard bob, which I can do myself with no problem (once I get her to sit still). It's very sweet, but a little dull.

Also, what are the opinions on fringe vs no fringe (side parting) on a toddler? DDs hair has been slow to grow in at the front so she has a soft fringe by default, I'm not sure if I should develop it into a real fringe or let it grow out...

I know I could just take her to the hairdressers but TBH I'm loath to spend money on getting her hair cut when I'm so desperate for a haircut myself .

Bobs are hard to do, I'm sure.

I saw a reality show years ago where someone had to try and pass themselves off as a hairdresser, and the way they measured it was to stage a "competition" between the fake hairdresser and two real ones, in which they each cut a bob like that and were judged on it by semi-famous sleb hairdressers with nothing better to do. Lots of talk about how deceptively tricky a cut the bob was, IIRC. Person attmepting to "fake it" didn't succeed.

Looking back, I'm wondering why I watched that

i've had one bob cut perfectly in my life, it was never repeated! i then had to give up bobs as they never came close to how perfect that one was.

give her a pageboy instead

I love that sparse fringe.
I loathe really heavy fringes.
OP-I like the fringe tbh, but your daughter is such a pretty little thing I think it looks great as it is.

I'm absolutely going to wait until she's older (4 or 5) to move from a bog standard bob to a shingle bob or a graduated bob. I do like sharpish hair on little ones, I think it works well with the inevitable disheveled, chubby cuteness.

'tis a matter of taste I suppose.

The general consensus seems to be that she needs a fringe (with her standard bob). Of course, she's beautiful whatever I do with her hair but I will heed the advice! I am a little sad that I'll have to cut one in but I was worried I was deluding myself in thinking I could leave her fringe-less. Oh well .

TBH I hadn't considered giving her a 'light' fringe, I though it needed to be 'closed', for some reason. So, after her bath tonight I dried her hair with a light mock-up fringe instead of in a side parting like I usually do. It did look like it'll be sweet.

Tomorrow is hair cut day. So, (also on DD's behalf) thank you!

Oh fuck, just looked at the photos again. Actually I'm not sure I should cut in a fringe at all .

Her hair is so much fuller when it's freshly washed and blow dried than it normally is it looked OK. But, if I look at the photos, where it is much grottier than normal, but more like normal than it is newly blowdried IYSWIM I'm worried a few wisps over her very high and rather round forehead will accentuate rather than disguise it.

Gah,

But really Pixie? The fringe is better?

If you look at the 3rd and 4th photos the sides of her forehead are left bare with the block fringe. It looks like her hairline is in line with the tops of her ears. Which it is at the bit-where-men-recede- first. To get a sparse fringe that covers the whole forehead I need to start the fringe in a line with the back of her ears and I couldn't do that!

I agree that she looks better in the second photo than in the first, no question. But that's will all the hair from her crown to her hairline falling forward. She's developed a parting horizontally across her head at her crown...

Her clothing situation is dire ATM but I always think that if her hair is nice she still looks like I make an effort to take care of her appearance .

I'm projecting over thinking this, aren't I?

It seems I totally failed to punctuate my last post . I blame the panic! Sorry.

DTD-can´t see the photos from yesterday but you are waaay overthinking this!

Leave the fringe as it is& just straighten the back!

eandh · 25/04/2010 09:50

Both my dd's have fringes, dd1 has longer hair (was v.long now cut to below her shoulders) I grew her fringe out last year but it didnt really suit her so she has a very whispy fringe now. DD2 has inherited my dead straight fine hair so she has a just below chin length bob and fringe although am starting to think she may suit not having a fringe (its just the thought of growing it out that makes me keep it) I love dd2 hair just a quick comb and normally a clip or riboon to the side (where as DD1 needs to be 'done' everyday)

Pics of both on my profile

diddl · 25/04/2010 11:29

eandh-your eldest looks so much better without a fringe imo.

Your youngest seems to have a similar face so it would probably look better on her too.

eandh · 26/04/2010 06:04

oooo what a dilema I would love to grow them but remembers the hair all over her face stage maybe hair extentsions on their fringes

ninedragons · 26/04/2010 07:01

I did it on my toddler DD by accident. She looks lovely, and you wouldn't believe the number of people who have remarked on what a gorgeous haircut she has.

She has very thick, wavy hair which was clearly a good starting point.

I did it when she was in the bath. I did two quick chops from the back (she already had a fringe). I was aiming for a normal bob but she slid away from me just as I did the first cut.
