I am desperatley trying to find a hairdye that will actually dye my hair for more than 2 weeks. I have mostly dark hair but I also have random patches of grey/white hair. I last dyed my hair 2 weeks ago and already I can see the white ones again

Its not grow through, its just as though the dye isn't permanent on the white ones.... any reccomendations? please????

Nice N Easy. Wrap cling film round hair when dye on, wrap towel round, leave for 45 mins.

KickArseQueen · 23/04/2010 22:07

Ah so maybe I'm not leaving it on long enough then? The last one I used was a nice and easy, but I only left it for 30mins....

what colour lighter same darker?

schartzkopf do a semi tone on tone called country colours that lasts 8 weeks gives good colour and obliterates grey, meaning less root faffing when you grow out as you just need to top up when grey starts peeking through again

MissWooWoo · 23/04/2010 22:10

for stubborn greys you do need to leave it that bit longer ...

paddingtonbear1 · 23/04/2010 22:12

I have a fair bit of grey and use L'oreal Excell 10. I tried a Clairol one as it was cheaper, but found it didn't 'take' as well, so went back to the L'oreal one. I don't get any grey coming back except re-growth (which sadly happens all too quickly these days...)

Try applying to dry hair rather than towel-dried.

I like the Daniel Field ones at the moment, in the instructions they say that to get a more permanent result, apply to dry hair.

Daniel Field

Though tbh most of the major brands should give you a permanent result, especially if you use them regularly so it 'builds up'.

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 23/04/2010 22:15

oh and make sure you use a dark enough shade to start with of course.

KickArseQueen · 23/04/2010 22:45

Well, I always apply to dry hair and I usually go for a shade slightly lighter than my own because my hair is quite dark so, if I go for slightly darker I end up looking gothic, which isn't all well and good, but not the look I was going for. iyswim?

I do have to avoid anything with an even slightly red tone in it tho, because the white hairs go pink

I tried the L'oreal excell 10 a while back and that didn't last very long either, I think I will experiment with all the recomendations and leave them on a bit longer, all the women in my family tend to very resistant premature greys, but mine are very white, and I have streaks (think morticia), I'm thinking give it another 15 years and I may just let the dye grow out. It could be kinda cool! Or not!

Thanks for the advice, I shall go dye shopping tomorrow............

hmmm I've always wanted to go blonde.... Every time I see extreme blonde hairdye I get this temptation, but I'm naturally about a number 120 on here So I don't think it would work.

What shade have you been using?

If you've got naturally 'cool' colouring, you could try a dark ash brown, or even black, but not left on for the max time - then you avoid the problem of orange and pink shades on the grey.

KickArseQueen · 23/04/2010 23:34

I've been using a lighter shade (can't remember which one -i'm that strange woman that you see in sainsbury's holding her hair against the the shades on the boxes and muttering to herself ) than my natural, my theory was that it would not make much of a dent in the colour of the brown hairs but would tone the whites in by making them darker. Its very hard to lighten my hair but if I go darker It looks very fake/I look ill.

I will deffo watch out for orange shades! I could end up looking like a tiger!

I'm tempted to try just dying the streak it mentioned it on the daniel field site.... Any thoughts on whether its a good plan or not, we are talking an almost block of white right at the front....

I alwas apply to dry hair too

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 24/04/2010 09:09

I find that if I use anything lighter than dark brown, it fades very quickly (my hair's naturally very dark ash brown).

Maybe try something a bit closer to your natural shade? If you stick to ash browns you shouldn't get any orangey or pinkey tones on the grey either.

Re dyeing just the streak, you could maybe do a strand test to see if this works?

KickArseQueen · 25/04/2010 11:17

Wish me luck.....
