Do you wear powder?

FluffyDonkey · 23/04/2010 15:31

Went for a make-over today to buy the make-up for my wedding. Don't often wear make-up and have never worn powder before.

The bloke said the powder is "essential" to look good in the photos etc. (to use on face, neck and chest) but up close I'm not sure I like the look...

Seeing as I left a small fortune behind in the shop, I'm rethinking all my purchases and may return one or two items (for example I'll keep the lipstick but not the lipliner)

But I'm in two minds about the powder. What do you think?

BTW - The wedding is in July, with most the photos being taken outside (hopefully in the sun).
BTW - the powder is an ordinary powder, not bronzing stuff

Thanks

If it is a good quality powder - or a mineral one- it will set and soften your make up.
Is it mineral to wear on its own and blend into the skin or is it a finishing powder to lightly dust over the top?

Mineral powder is excellent for evening skin tone, covering imperfections and stoping you getting shiney in the heat. But it has to be a good one.
Whos is it?

FluffyDonkey · 23/04/2010 15:35

Sisley
And it's over a foundation base if that helps - no idea about mineral (am rubbish with make-up)

I second mineral powder, and use Bare Essentials. Gives you a glow.

I wear it over a tinted moisturiser so it doesn't seem powdery.

MamaMary · 23/04/2010 15:37

Personally, I need to wear powder as I have slightly oily skin. If I had to choose between foundation and powder, I'd go for powder. At a summer wedding you will get flushed and hot and I'd say powder is a necessity!

TrillianAstra · 23/04/2010 15:39

Sometimes a bit. I have quite even skin so am more likely to wear a bit of powder brushed over and no foundation.

FluffyDonkey · 23/04/2010 15:44

I am learning!

I didn't buy the foundation as I have some tinted moisturised at home (although the bloke kindly gave me enough samples for me to try it out at home and also wear it to the wedding)

Would you recommend the tinted moisturised plus powder rather than foundation plus powder?

Or would just powder do?

Feel pathetic asking these questions!

no but have dry skin

WolframAlpha · 23/04/2010 15:48

I wear a mineral powder sometimes, but over primed skin no foundation.

Do you still have the make-up that he did on? I would take a pic. And do it your way and take a pic in the same light and see which you like best. Obv pics not more important than how you feel/look in rl on the day, but might help?

FluffyDonkey · 23/04/2010 15:49

Am reading the box :

"Anti-dehydrating compact foundation. Melts on for a second-skin effect and provides optimal comfort. Diffuses light, minimises fine lines and skin imperfections. The complexion is smoothe, unified and radiant. Long-lasting. Apply with a dry sponge or brush."

Huh.

Apparently it has "botanical extracts"

Still none the wiser

So, that's a powder foundation? He's got you wearing a liquid foundation and then that ^ on top? have I got that right?

slug · 23/04/2010 16:07

If you are not normally a makeup wearer then powder over foundation is going to be a bit much.

A light dusting of powder can make a world of difference (if it's a good one that is) without needing to pile on the slap. Do you feel comfortable wearing it? Have you tried putting it on yourself and can you get it to look right? If you don't like the look, then what is the point of wearing it and feeling uncomfortable?

If you are still undecided, you could return it. Try buying a sample or two from lilylolo They're only £1.25 for a sample pot, which is more than enough to see you through several practise sessions and the wedding itself.

aquavit · 23/04/2010 16:09

I always use a bit of loose powder

this sounds like something a bit more noticeable though

if you don't like the way it looks, take it back! and maybe try a different powder, something less intrusive? (a good loose powder shouldn't really be visible at all but just help your base last longer and stop you getting shiny; mineral powders are more like foundations in themselves)

FluffyDonkey · 23/04/2010 16:09

Yep

southeastastra · 23/04/2010 16:10

yes no7 transluscent loose always

FluffyDonkey · 23/04/2010 16:16

The yep was to Wolf

Am still wearing the original make-up. Must get colleagues to take a photo of me before it all rubs off

Thanks for the link slug - that looks good. Especially the sample pots as I'm not sure I'd wear the powder very much after.

Thanks for all the replies

Can you wear powder with dry skin?

Downdog · 23/04/2010 23:36

I've never really worn powder but I did get some Jurlique Rose Powder a couple of years back & love it. Don't use it all the time - but it is exceptionally light & fine, and stops skin looking oily, plus it 'sets' a face of makeup. I use it over tinted moisturiser and on bare skin too if I need to.

They do a lavender one too.

I've been using Corn Silk for years and love it. It's great for eliminating shiny skin, without building up, no matter how often it's used.

Apparently Mineral powders are all the rage at the moment, but I've not tried them.

AllThreeWays · 24/04/2010 03:44

Mineral powders are great, but not for photographs as the titanium dioxide in them washed you out as it reflects light.

As to whether you should were normal powder...yes, it will set and hold your foundation to help it last the whole day.

Probably would recommend keeping the lip liner too if I were you, as it will stop the lipstick bleeding into fine lines around your mouth.

Yes it all seems like lot right now, but is worth it to look fab for the whole day and have great photos to boot

AllThreeWays · 24/04/2010 03:47

erk..
^washes you out
and

I wear Clinique loose powder over vitalumiere ( which i decided to try again after trying yrs ago and deciding against but is now lovely on my skin) I've used the Clinique one for yrs. I dont pile it on but I do need a bit to stop the shine, I would, personally, recommend powder for a wedding.

Foundation + powder doesn't have to mean over done.
