Dare to wear a bikini when 6m pregnant?

Sartorial question: is anyone noticeably pregnant going to dare to wear a bikini this summer? I should point out that I am not a skinny (pear-shaped so smaller up top, big bum and thighs and rugby player calves!). I wouldn't wear one to a public pool (prefer all in one for swimming comfort) but if on holiday on a beach or by a pool with a sarong to cover up for cafe trips etc. I kinda think, why the hell shouldn't I? From a quick look at threads on other sites it seems some (not only but mainly blokes- probably the same type who don't like b-feeding in public) find this distressing to the eye.

OK, so whale woman isn't the same as itsy bitsy Bardot type, but (after repressing the self-consciousness and with appropriate sun cream) you get so hot in later stages of pregnancy and isn't it nice to let it all hang out?

I would, but then I am fairly immune to onlooker opinions. Comfort is key when heavily pregnant!

SecretSlattern · 22/04/2010 11:39

I think it looks horrible, sorry

WickedWitchSouthWest · 22/04/2010 11:41

I will be wearing a bikini in my back garden but I wouldn't wear one to the local swimming pool I'm 30+4 btw and have just bought a rather lovely one-piece from Topshop to wear to Center Parcs in a few weeks time! If we were going abroad I wouldn't be so coy though.

biddyofsuburbia · 22/04/2010 11:42

Sartorially speaking if you have got a lovely bump then I don't see why you shouldn't wear a bikini! What is wrong with having a bump - you see lots of men letting it all hang out and they are much less attractive than a pg woman and I find them quite distressing to the eye but obviously would never say so as I'm no oil painting myself - so anyone from that school of thought can just bog off imo! I will never wear one again due to horrific stretchmarks, so if you've got it flaunt it & make the most of it!

It's a while since I was pg but do I recall something about sunlight & baby's developing eyes which did make me worry about exposing bump to too much sun but that may be a load of old bull? sure someone will clarify now I've gone and said that!

I saw a heavily pregnant woman on holiday at our hotel in Tenerife (she was Italian) in a bikini and I thought she looked great.

SkaterGrrrrl · 22/04/2010 11:56

Im 4 months and have every intention of packing my bikini and a tankini when I go abroad next month!

choppychopster · 22/04/2010 11:58

I wore a bikini on holiday when I was 7mths pregnant. My bump was pretty much stretchmark-free and I was fairly slim elsewhere, so why not? Actually, it made a change to have decent boobs to fill my bikini top out! Would only wear a one-piece swimsuit at a public pool.

witchwithallthetrimmings · 22/04/2010 12:04

tbh was more comfortable wearing one (nice tight rounded golden bump) when 7 months pregnant than now (saggy post 2 section wrinkly tummy)

lynnexxxo · 22/04/2010 13:27

I agree with witchwith..

My tummy looked far better pregnant than its current crinkly state.

SuSylvester · 22/04/2010 14:14

i HATE pregnant guts - even my own
they make me feel all ill

minxofmancunia · 22/04/2010 14:22

I prefer wearing one when pg and did both times. Had very neat compact rounded bups and no excess elsewhere, with ds my 2nd I even went in at the sides!

Will not wear one now not pg though due to hated saggy, squishy, cellulity horrid belly. It's not huge (still a size 8-10) but it looks ugly and I hate the apperance of it.

Am going to get a couple of tankisnis for holiday to France this summer. Am that my bikini years are behind me...

MrsMotMot · 22/04/2010 16:51

Oh definately, go for it. Agree with everyone who points out you are likely to be firm and taut in the tum department and no crinkles. That comes later!

Even if you are ravaged by stretchmarks, tbh on the beach everyone is just worrying about how they look, Or thinking, oooh, lovely pregnant lady, how nice, and reminiscing about their pregnancies!

orangina · 22/04/2010 17:01

definitely. preferred it than wearing one now... LOVE the belly thing.

WickedWitchSouthWest · 22/04/2010 18:18

choppy that's pretty much how I feel about my boobs too Hadn't thought of the aspect of having a nice tight bump and no lumpy bits - I'm carrying all on the front and don't look pg from the back so I might stick a bikini in and see how I feel!

I did.

Only the last pregnancy - was the only time I had the confidence. BUT I had lost a lot of weight through sickness and was slim all over the rest of me iyswim.

Flamesparrow · 22/04/2010 18:58

BeLove - please don't advertise your site after posts, it is both against the rules and rude.

MadameCastafiore · 22/04/2010 18:58

I did on holiday in Italy - was brill DH's best mates wife was there and she is obsessed with being slim but she very saggy - I got away with wearing a bikini as just had huge belly and rest of me had yet to balloon - go for it.

hana · 22/04/2010 19:09

i did with dd2 and looked fab (!) no stretchmarks and in good shape. why not? whatever you're comfortable with

BeLove · 29/04/2010 18:31

Hi there Flamesparrow
sorry you thought adding a link to Be Love site was 'rude'. Be Love is an organisation that promotes peace and social justice, they sell clothing to fund their amazing work. I help out as a volunteer and find their t shirts beautifully cover my post pregnancy belly!

apologies ..

MrsBadger · 29/04/2010 18:34

...and you just happen to work for them, eh?

pay your fee if you want to advertise

BeLove · 29/04/2010 18:54

I'm an unpaid volunteer,
my 2 children are my work.

KristinaM · 29/04/2010 19:39

yes of course you should wear a bikini if you want to. Its not like you will look less pg in a swimsuit

next summer when you are just flabby you will look back fondly at your lovely bump
