Is it just me or are maternity clothes at the moment completely hideous?

I'm probably, realistically a size 16. Has anyone of a similar build found any remotely flattering tops? I don't do flowery or short sleeves as they just don't suit me . The colour range too is so boring. I'd quite like to get a white smock/kaften type top but ones I've tried have been like sacks and also see through (what's that all about?)

totally agree, I'm size 10 but having the same problem really. It took me hours of shopping to find a few bits I liked just about enough to buy (but certainly didn't love), and there was lots of truly rubbishly made stuff out there. Pretty much everything was either flowery/ mumsy, nothing like I would normally wear. The only exception was tons of nautical stuff but I would just look silly in that as we live by the sea

I think I will mainly try and buy the more floaty stuff from normal lines if possible, but not sure if this will hang right once the bump is large....

i have no suggestion si've been out twice looking for maternityu clothes (driving over 50 miles to get to shopping centres) and have so far bought 1 pare of jeans and each time have been a hormonal wreck sat in the middle of the respective shopping centre bawling my eyes out because i cant find anything i like!

tops have to be strechy, non floral, non lacy not really flowey. jeans have to be flared and i dont do trousers, jeans only. i dont wear shorts, but i do like knee length skirts, no shorter tho, and a bit of embroydery on a skirt is nice.

maternity skirts are non exsistant at the moment i think i may have to re-think my style. but its just so annoying when i know what suits me and what doesnt!

bamboobutton · 25/04/2010 17:12

totally agree too.

i am managing with roll top yaga pants and stretchy lycra tops at the moment.

went to every maternity section in the shops recently and the chioce was dire, anything nice was found in teenager places like topshop and were in microscopic sizes 6 or 8.

i don't know how i will manage in few weeks as it is aleady getting hot but i don't want to spend money on summer maternity when baby is due in 7 weeks time, i will have to boil in lycra i suppose!

bamboobutton · 25/04/2010 17:13

yaga??? yoga!

Booboobedoo · 25/04/2010 17:16

addicted What about this skirt?

Nymphadora · 25/04/2010 18:15

I have some from New Look and have ordered some from Next. I got most of my trousers in the US. Most things seem to be flowery , stripy or have 'slogans' on. I have few cheap tops from New Look/Peacocks/Asda normal range and hoping they will last abit longer.

tiredfeet · 26/04/2010 08:19

would agree about asos actually, I was moaning to DH last night about things I needed and how hard it was to find them, so we had a look online and actually asos has a bit of ok stuff and what I also like is that it has a lot of variety, and that there is some stuff that is not too 'mumsy', will see what its like when it arrives though!

MorrisZapp · 26/04/2010 13:51

I haven't got a big bump yet so am happy in my ordinary smocky, blousey stuff for just now. But I agree with the article that although many normal high street shops now stock maternity gear, they don't stock it actually on any high streets.

You have to go out of town to retail parks to find a branch that actually sells the stuff. I tried New Look, Asda and Next in town only to be told nope, you have to visit the faraway branches.

I've had some great bargains on ebay already, really chuffed with that. But for the life of me I can't work out why so many maternity styles feature wide necks/ spaghetti straps/ strapless etc. Hello - have any of the designers ever met a pregnant woman? Pregnant tits to not float in mid air, they need elephantine support, and therefore shoulder strap modesty.

umf · 26/04/2010 14:35

It's frightful. I like the maxi dresses, but not exactly everyday wear. Would look damn silly collecting ds from school dolled up in one of those.

Mamas and Papas dresses all boast "in this season's shorter length" - since when has a shorter length been a good thing in maternity wear??? Just possibly some models expecting their first babies have pg knees and thighs they want to show off, but I sure don't.

Why nothing between maxi and thigh?

trixymalixy · 26/04/2010 16:36

I was in topshop the other day and thought their maternity stuff was much much nicer than when i was pregnant last summer.

dizzydixies · 27/04/2010 12:09

forgot about Dorothy Perkins on line too - good for basics

MadameCheese · 27/04/2010 21:01

I just want tops to wear with jeans or loose trousers, is this too much to ask?

OP posts:
jemart · 28/04/2010 19:56

I found most maternity wear was exceptionally dull and frumpy. Therefore just bought one size larger in ordinary clothing, choosing longer looser shapes that will accomodate the bump.

jemart · 28/04/2010 19:57

Next do have some nice tops at the moment.

herjazz · 28/04/2010 21:03

I've got some nice, flattering, comfy stuff by noppies, Would recommend that brand. Google or ebay for sale stuff

been given an IO vest top which is fab.
Miles better than any of the cheap stuff I've bought

bought an IO dresas for work which is lovely but makes me look a bit obi wan kanobi, a I'm a short arse

I like the jojo pencil skirt but its huge. If yr a wavering size go for the lower one. Don't think much of their wrap tops tho

MadameCheese · 29/04/2010 15:21

Lol herjazz at your Obi wan reference! Right I'm going to give Next a go, with the excuse that I need to go there anyway as I have to buy DS some bits with his vouchers.

I haven't started MAT clothes shopping yet-so not to sure what the crack is...

But I had a look at ASOS on line mat wear and some of it looked really nice.
