I couldnt find anything to go with that skirt I bought from Coast.
After some serious shop trudging, dh admitted defeat and said to take it back and swap for a dress, of which there were lots.
So dh picked out this dress (WTF??) and I didnt think much of it, but when it was on I looked and felt fab.

I LOVE IT

It's a wedding and it's white... get a good colourful pashmina and ensure you keep it on all the time. And expect some nasty comments, not from the bride, but from other guests (I wore a cream outfit, with trousers, to a wedding, they bride didn't care, but my god, there were a few people making stinking remarks everytime I was passing near them)

AnyFucker · 19/04/2010 20:35

I agree with those saying it is a tad inappropriate for a wedding

Unless you are the bride

SoLongAsItsHealthy · 19/04/2010 20:41

Lovely dress but I'm afraid it's not really appropriate for a wedding. I'm sure the bride won't notice or care on the day but when she's flicking through the photos months later, she probably will. And I agree with Mongolia, the other guests will definitely notice and you'll get a lot of dodgy looks. A girl wore white to my friend's wedding a few years back and we still laugh about it now. She turned up late, church doors flung open literally seconds before the bride came down the aisle, all nubile, tanned and gorgeous and sporting a white silk shift dress. It was a truly bizarre moment. And the bride definitely clocked it.

Personally? It's a no-no from me. You will look amazing in it. But let someone else be a vision in white that day. Save it for hols in St Tropez.

RedBlueRed · 19/04/2010 20:44

Monochrome is IN apparently so accessorise with black jewellery/jacket/clutch and it will look much less bride-like? Just a thought.

'Tis a beautiful dress.

ComeAgain · 19/04/2010 20:47

Yikes, do don't have to have read Debrett's to know you can't wear that to a wedding!!! Do you hate the bride or something? No, no, no, it will never do

scrimble · 19/04/2010 21:53

It's lovely, but do you really have to wear it to a wedding? I wouldn't...

am totally that people think its inapprpriate for a wedding. I think my with black accessories it will be fab.

FWIW bride is in proper gown and full church wedding.

I just dont get it, I wouldnt have minded if my entire guests wore white, as long as no one turned up in a bride's dress.

Clarissimo · 20/04/2010 12:08

That dress was in teh window of HofF in Cwmbran Mosschops

It is fabulous

As for is it suitable for a wedding- depernds on wedding tbh. My Aunt is getting amrried in a scarlet ballgown (in glastonbury LOL) soon and I wrote it Off for that but lots of toehr weddings it would be fine for I think

mosschops30 · 20/04/2010 12:13

Wish Id have know that I had to have it sent from Southampton to Cardiff as there were hardly any anywhere!

I agree, especially if it was registry office, or maybe 2nd marriage where perhaps the bridge may not be in full bridal gown, veil etc. But she is and I dont think it will look remotely bridal stood next to my extremely glam friend

minibmw2010 · 20/04/2010 12:23

It is just considered bad etiquette or manners to wear the same colour as the bride (I think), its not to do with anyone mistaking you for the bride ...

Alicetheinvisible · 20/04/2010 12:28

I think it is fine as long as you add either black or a colour. Will the bride even be in white? So many people go for pale pink, ivory, silver, cream, champagne etc anyway. I agree that if it was obviously flouncy then it would be a bit much, but it is very simple, and in a big church wedding highly unlikely to have the bride in something so unbridelike iyswim? Wear it!

How close are you to the bride? Could you ask her opinion?

RooBear · 20/04/2010 12:35

I wouldn't worry, I'm going to my best friends wedding in may and i'm wearing a white dress, its cotton/linen over the knee with sliver on it and i'm just putting a little blue shrug on. I think as long as its not knee length and silk-which its not- it will look great

mosschops30 · 20/04/2010 13:14

yes the bride is a good friend. TBH I dont want to hassle her about MY dress 3 days before her wedding, she'd probably just say 'oh I dont care, wear what u like'

secondly if I ask her and she says no you cant which i would say is 99.9% unlikely to happen then Im shagged for a dress

OP posts:
Alicetheinvisible · 20/04/2010 13:15

Well, if you know her well, then you have a good idea of what she will think. Have a lovely time

bamboostalks · 20/04/2010 13:20

I would never wear a white dress like that to a white church wedding. Many people will think that it is inappropriate..surprised you have not heard of that convention.

bamboostalks · 20/04/2010 13:20

Lovely dress though, very Jackie O.

mosschops30 · 20/04/2010 13:34

Nope never heard of it

What a beautifully chic dress, no wonder you were feeling so, ahem, appreciative of your DH .

I saw a French bride get married in a registry office in Aix en Provence in a v similar dress. She looked superb. I tell you that you emphasis how chic the dress is, not to indicate its bridal.

I wouldn't have cared if someone wore that at my wedding (which was relatively casual). At a traditional wedding where the bride is wearing the big, long gown, and you have accessorised with colour, think its completely fine. If I was the bride, I would just be noticing how chic the dress was (can't stop using that c word...).

tulpe · 20/04/2010 14:05

Again, I would say that it is not bridal. Fair enough, if it were a registry office wedding but it is clearly a big church do with big gown & veil involved so mosschops is highly unlikely to be mistaken for bride.

I also think that the comments about what other guests will think are totally irrelevant. Mosschops has already said that the bride - who is clearly good friends with her - is highly unlikely to be bothered. Only the opinions of bride & groom count on their big day, imho, and so Mosschops should wear her lovely dress with pride

BTW, you were asking about cheap-ish wraps.......can heartily recommend H&M. They have some gorgeous wraps and shawls at the moment and are always very good value. Not at all cheap looking either. Have many from there and have worn with everything from jeans to designer dresses and always get compliments on them

mosschops30 · 20/04/2010 14:11

OMG such a mixture of opinions, but I agree with the fact that Im not bothered about the rest of the guests, its my friends and her dh-to-be big day and I will in no way be putting her in the shade (in fact if she were to turn up in a bin liner she would still look better, if she wasnt my friend Id hate her )

thanks for the heads up on H&M tulpe I will pop in sometime this week, we have two big H&M's in town so should find something

OP posts:
tulpe · 20/04/2010 14:14

Good girl

You might also want to consider accessorising with gold tones - but dull/antique tones rather than brash & shiny gold. A fab pendant and a statement bangle would definitely soften the white, iyswim. Again, H&M have loads and Top Shop would also be a good bet.

mosschops30 · 20/04/2010 14:22

I have a scary thought that the bridesmaids may be in black and white which buggers me up on the black front.

I could do gold, I have some amazing gold shoes that have been in my wardrobe a year, that I could wear. Or I could put my navy, red and white shoes with it.

I could get the navy and white version of the dress but its not as nice and no where near as versatile as the white one

OP posts:
mosschops30 · 20/04/2010 16:40

I rang the bride, and I said I have a white dress for the wedding, and she said she'd heard mutterings about it at other weddings where a guest wore white but that she didnt understand the fuss and as long as I wasnt in a bridal gown then it was fine

I said Id leave my veil at home and she said no bring it for a laugh and confuse everyone

Anyway have just picked dress up from post office and now have to try it on with various shoes (hoping the gold will go nicely). Apparently is 19 degrees here on saturday so may not need a wrap

OP posts:
EggyAllenPoe · 20/04/2010 20:35

i think 19 degrees = still cool indoors so take a wrap! and weddings are all day affairs...

not my thing, but i can see what everyone else is saying here - simple, classic, chic...

and yes i think gold shoes could really work well.

I like the idea of monochrome chunky accessories ala Jackie O, to emphasise the slightly 60's esque nature of the dress.

funnily enough, DH boughtme a dress years ago, and every time I wear it I remember I owe him, ahem, One.
