Hair help needed - long thick and greying

tootootired · 18/04/2010 23:14

My hair is doing me in. It is very thick, wavy but not definitely curly, brown, good sprinkling of grey coming in the roots. Shoulder length at the mo with long layers (growing out) and slight fringe.

Seems to me the best thing is to keep it long, so it can be put up loosely or have long layers that are heavy enough to pull it down: but does there come a point where that looks ridiculous the wrong side of 40? It is getting harder to keep up with the dyeing as the grey comes through horribly obviously at my parting.

I have very thick hair too - and am wrong side of 45!

I have it cut regularly in a very sharp geometric bob, which emphasises the thickness, rather than than trying to hide it.

I get a lot of compliments.

Not sure about the greying though... that is a problem I yet have to face.

thelunar66 · 18/04/2010 23:19

Just realised the pic on my profile does not show my new thick bob. I will try to find one and add it.

scurryfunge · 18/04/2010 23:21

Watching with interest for ideas - mine is the same tootootired.I'm going for the badger look at the moment but need a change

tootootired · 18/04/2010 23:21

Too wavy for that I think, I would be literally half an hour with the straighteners to maintain a sharp style.

Is your hair naturally straight lunar?

OP posts:
thelunar66 · 18/04/2010 23:24

No... my hair is wavy, with an especially strong kink across the back. I use Treseme straightener spray thingy and blow dry around a fat brush.

thelunar66 · 18/04/2010 23:30

Bugger... cannot find a decent pic of me that shows current hair do. Will try to google a similar one and link

like this, but a tad longer 4.bp.blogspot.com/_p39Trjz5E-o/SO3EHfdLptI/AAAAAAAAAPY/JuZuQ8aMjnk/s400/Short+red+mod+bob+with+bangs .jpg

I bet it looks lovely on you, but have to say I was hoping for something that went with the wave a bit more as I'm hamfisted with blowdrying and also don't have much time. thanks though

OP posts:
thelunar66 · 18/04/2010 23:49

The blow drying takes 10 mins max.

OsbegaEthewulf · 19/04/2010 09:30

watching with interest as I have exactly the same hair as you. I am utterly fed up with it as I feel like it is dragging my face downwards which doesn't help with the jowls! I'm 46 and had the same hairstyle for years and I want a change!

tootootired · 19/04/2010 20:00

see... blowdrying is obviously the only answer

tootoo have you tried using some curl mousse and scrunching it with a diffuser.

tootootired · 19/04/2010 22:54

Have tried mousse but don't have a diffuser - would it give better curls than leaving to dry naturally (resulting in uneven draggly sheep effect)? I will go and buy one if it helps!

OP posts:
dolphin13 · 19/04/2010 23:27

Yes it will give much better curls. Your hair looks as if it would suit that look.
Wish minewas that thick

Bonsoir · 20/04/2010 07:59

You need to grow out your fringe and cut your hair into a shorter bob, and then dry it to maximise curl. This will require lots of practise with shampoos/conditioners/styling products.

tootootired · 20/04/2010 17:58

OK will try a diffuser before any drastic cutting.

Bonsoir I take your point seriously, I am quite attached to my fringe though - and also want my hair to be long enough to be tied up in one hairband (no slides) as I'm outdoors a lot and look like a fright when windblown (sorry so fusssy). By shorter do you mean just off the shoulders, not jaw length I take it?

OP posts:
Bonsoir · 21/04/2010 16:03

Yes, just above your shoulders. If it is curly you could then keep it off your face with a headband, which is quite a good look if you can find the right sort of headband...

Alouiseg · 21/04/2010 16:06

Professional blow dry once a week at a reasonably priced salon or home hairdresser.

I also factor in a monthly root tint to keep me looking feeling young.

tootootired · 21/04/2010 16:20

Ta - will try a wee bit shorter at next trim, already overdue. I did about 3 months of curly-girling but was defeated by itching scalp, will perhaps try to reintroduce some of the products though.

ROFL at having time for weekly professional blow dry and root tint but good on you Alousieg. Finding child free time for the 6 week cut & colour is a challenge. You are talking to a bare-minimum styler here I'm afraid

cornsilk · 21/04/2010 16:26

Decent shampoo/conditioner,highlights or lowlights (depending on your colouring) and a really good cut with a senior stylist. Bobs don't suit all face shapes - ask the stylist what will suit you. A good cut is the most important thing.
