in exactly the same boat as you darkandstormy ... have been using nice & easy but really it's never right, always ends up as "felt tip brown". I'm looking for a brown like demi moore's colour but diy and for $$$$ less.

hope someone comes along with the perfect shade ....

I have this problem and find in the end I have to use one that is slightly darker than I want. Once washed a few times it is normally fine.

I do want it dark, but not black.

darkandstormy · 16/04/2010 17:08

probably the best I have had so far is nice and easy medium brown, but even on short hair it loads up on the ends too heavy.Years ago I used to use Jo Hansford home colour in chestnut brown , brilliant, but guess what?they stopped making it...

Botanics Bitter Chocolate Brown is my favourite from Boots. Nice dark and glossy and lasts ages (months).

MissWooWoo · 16/04/2010 17:13

is that a permament Smilehighclub?

Cheappinkfizz · 16/04/2010 17:13

I use Nice and easy no 118, looks natural (according to friends). I'm easily over 50% grey on top and have a pure white steak at the front which it covers well.

I've been using it constantly for 3 years now, don't plan to change

Cheappinkfizz · 16/04/2010 17:15

I've just checked and it's the same one as you use darkandstormy

MissWooWoo · 16/04/2010 17:20

I've got a 117D Nice and Easy "cool brown" sitting in the bathroom - which I think is a shade darker than what I usually use ... might give that a go but really tempted by the botanics if it's permanent.

darkandstormy · 16/04/2010 17:21

cheappinkfizz, must admit it gives a good result probably the best.It does not go that brassy orange look.I think it is probably the most Davina Mccall we are gonna get out of a bottle, without paying the trillions.

I want hair the colour of Nicky Kinnaird of Space Nk
Have been much darker for years and now it looks a little aging
Am trying Feria French Roast at the moment

Squiz · 16/04/2010 18:33

I've just used a Boots Botanic permanant dye but found it's not covered the grey very well, even though I left it for 10 minutes extra. After looking at the box it doesn't say that it does cover all grey!

I keep doing this, buying a dye I like the colour of but forgetting to check if it covers 100% grey. Wish I could find a dye which covers grey for more than 2 weeks and doesn't make my head really itchy (Nice and Easy).

Lulumaam · 16/04/2010 18:35

nicky kinnaird has Good Hair

i used one of the watercolour dyes, daniel galvin IIRC, which was good, dark and glossy

but i have mostly been using clairol nice & easy semi permanent in light golden red..the dark brown is a bit harder to carry off these days ( am getting a bit old!! ) and something lighter and a bit warmer than my natural colour seems far more forgiving

SoupDragon · 16/04/2010 18:39

I am currently Pecan Nut by Garnier Nutrisse. This is too dark for your requirements but I've always found they last well (I've also been several other shades!)

I tried the L'Oreal 10 ones a couple of times and, whilst I liked the colour, I didn't find they lasted very well.

MaggieW · 16/04/2010 19:03

Nice'n'Easy 118 is a lovely warm shade and looks natural. I've also tried the Perfect 10 Medium Brown with good results too, but prefer 118.
