Colour class - has anyone done this?

It is my birthday soon and I feel in desperate need for an 'uplift'. Saw an ad from House of Colour, promising to show you exactly which colours suit you best. For another £100 or so, they will advise on style and shape. Has anyone ever tried this? It's a lot of money and a very long drive, so it would have to be worth it.

Just get your friends round, they will tell you and you can all get drunk

abitworried · 14/04/2010 22:29

DH has just bought me a voucher for this, and I'm going on Saturday - eek!

Where abouts in the country are you??

brimfull · 14/04/2010 22:32

I went to one a long time ago

the colour bit is good, the style bit which I only observed didn't participate in ,looked a bit crap imo

basically they out you into one of 6 or so style personalities
eg gypsy/romantic , tailored , etc

then she proceeded to try and sell clothes made for you in the colours that suited you
what put me off was the vast array of blazers that looked homemade in every colour under the sun

woman was wearing a peach one

this was about 10 yrs ago so may be completely irrelevant

brimfull · 14/04/2010 22:33

there are a few companies that do this
I went to one a few yrs ago
can't remember which company
woman answered the door top to toe in turquoise

I do think it does teach you what suits you and what def doesn't

That's interesting Hedda, I obviously had a near miss with the cambridge person, I went for one near Duxford instead with my mum (Xmas present for her).

It was good to go together, and I think she was quite accurate - also she didn't do "seasons" but worked on cool/warm and deep/muted spectrums.

It was here

The website looks quite swish, but actually she's working out of a room in her house.

She was dressed quite neutrally herself (black and white) and seemed to give a good overall picture and definitely wasn't selling anything.

For example she gave me and my mum a few tips on make-up (and made me up well), glasses and hair, despite it only being a colour consultancy.

I changed my hair colour yesterday (or rather my hairdresser did) based on the results of the colour analysis workshop I did last month. I was a bit sceptical (as was my hairdresser), but it really does suit me much better, I'm a "Summer" so my hair should be cool, where I had warm honey foils in before.

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 16/04/2010 21:06

Defo recommend the book. It's pretty easy to figure out your colour and it gives you a pallet.

jamaisjedors · 17/04/2010 08:05

Tell us more TeaOneSugar, I also should wear cool colours and wanted to go from honey highlights to dark brown but the hairdresser wouldn't let me!

What shade did you go for? Did the hairdresser know what you meant by cool?

abitworried · 23/04/2010 12:26

I had this done recently, so here's my experience!

The 'consultant' was very nice/ professional, but looked much older in the flesh than on her profile pic .

I didn't like her particular style very much - too bright/co-ordinated in what I would describe as 'gaudy' colours

BUT

The colour session was very good, and although I was a bit skeptical, I REALLY did see the diference colour makes on the skin tone. It's especially obvious when you're looking at the others having it done, but less obvious when looking at yourself.

I came out as a spring - so warm tones, light, bright colours.

I thought I was OK with this, but on coming home I've found that nearly all my wardrobe is 'WRONG' and I therefore feel a bit depressed, as I'm now looking at stuff and thinking 'I can't wear that, it's wrong', but equally I don't have any alternatives .

I don't want to go for a mega shop yet, as I have a few pounds to shift, which means that I'm between a 12/14 at the moment, with a lot of 12s feeling a bit too snug, and 14s feeling too big, so nothing seems to fit.

The other thing is, that when I look at my 'colours' a lot of them are colours I always regard as a bit 'cheap-looking'. I have light blong hair, and can look a bit too tarty if I get it wrong....

Oh dear - did anyone else feel a bit depressed afterwards?

mckenzie · 23/04/2010 19:59

I had a HoC colour session done about 5 months ago and it has changed how I dress. I now use colour much more and feel better for it, get compliments for it and my wardrobe feels more structured. i also think I now make less 'mistake' purchases. I didn't do the style section though.

What i thought was interesting though was previously I have used the personal shopper at John Lewis and when I looked at the colours in the outfits they had chosen for me, they were very similar to the colours that HoC picked out for me.

So, seeing as John Lewis personal shopper is free and HoC isn't, I think I would recommend the personal shopper route first.
