Do you wear when you have blue/grey eyes, mousey brown hair and a paleish complexion?

Oh, and I'm in my mid 30's.

Have always been too much of an outdoor kind of girl to be bothered to wear makeup, but after 2 kids I'm thinking I need to do something to make me feel a bit more special and a little bit of makeup might do the job.

Thanks everyone

eyeshadow-I woudl say neutral sandy type colour. I ahve your colouring with darker hair.

You are wearing more than just eyeshadow though, right?

barrym · 13/04/2010 19:51

I've got a beautiful greyish one from no7 that I wear all the time, its a cream called pewter and if you are a ham fisted amateur new to make up it is really easy to put on and light colour so you swish it on with your finger and nothing bad happens.

mamazon · 13/04/2010 19:52

if you have never worn make up before i would say that eye shadow is quite difficult to get right. its very easy to put too much on and end up looking like barbara cartland.

Get a good foundation, some excellent mascara and a decent eye liner. bit of lipgloss and sweep of bronzer/blusher.

stay neutral. enhance not hide your face.

coldtits · 13/04/2010 19:53

golden sandy colour

Will emphasise your blue eyes without swamping your pale face

MunchMummy · 13/04/2010 19:54

cyb - do I need more than just a dab of colour on my lids?

I really have never worn makeup before and am a complete novice to this.

What else would I need, bearing in mind that I have a 1 yr old and a preschooler to get out of the house at 8:15 every morning.
Oh, and not wanting to look like its been plastered on.

Its all so daunting

Eyeliner, mascara, foundation. Eek, this is more than I thought I'd need. Mind you, wrinkles are setting in nicely, maybe I should start to fill them in.

Maybe I'll buy a pewter and a sandy colour and experiment on an evening when the tiddlers are in bed. Or in the day and scare them!!

Thanks everyone

if you don't want to get totally made up then just get some mascara and a lipgloss.

that should be enugh for you to feel a little bit more glam without taking too long.

I think starting from scracth If I were you I would invest in some basics which are easy to apply.

To start with I would say:

Tinted moisturiser. If you have never worn foundation it can be a bit of a jump - so tinted moisturiser would be a good starting point, as it is sheer and you can apply with your fingers, and will not show up inexpert application like some foundations can. Try that Oil of Olay one.

Concealer. If you are starting to get shadows under your eyes, and redness round your nose, this is worth investing in. I use the By Terry Touche Veloute, however cheaper versions can be found in Body Shop and Max Factor. Look for the type which you apply with a brush. You can then even out your skin tone.

Cream blusher. Just smile and apply to the apples of your cheeks. Less aging than powder blusher. Tesco Make Up does the best cream blusher bar none.

Sandy eyeshadow. Not one too matte, one with a wee bit of shimmer. Bourjois ones are very good, you can just smudge a bit on with your fingers.

Mascara. Dark brown is best. I just buy any old cheap waterproof version, as I hate the clumpy lashes effect you get with false lash effect type mascara.

Lip gloss. Such as Juicy Tube. Or if you don't like the gloosy look a pinky beige lipstick. I am not a huge fan of lipstick, but in my view Bourjois do good ones at the cheaper end of the market (presumably if you have never worn make up before, you don't want to go out and spend a fortune on stuff you may not like and will not use again).

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/04/2010 20:00

Oh, and to answer your question, I have greeny blue eyes and the best colours which bring out the colours of my eyes are purple/lilac, mid brown, and grey/black.

pippinlippin · 13/04/2010 20:01

I am similar colouring and for everyday use a neutral skin-ish tone (brown/sandy/golden - ie not pinky) and then smudge a dark brown or grey eyeliner around the eges of lashes.

Agree with mamazon though, you're better off using just foundation, mascara, lip-gloss and blusher than worrying about eyeshadow.

MunchMummy · 13/04/2010 20:03

Many thanks everyone - its really really appreciated.

Can't believe I've made it to my mid 30's without trying it out before.

In my teens I was a freeky girl engineer more interested in building electronics than makeup and boys so missed out that stage. Then working round blokes all the time you don't want to get dolled up as they are quick to comment.

The next time I'm without my little darlings I think I'll have am embarassed nose around the makeup feeling like a teenager who doesn't know what she's doing.

Munch I tend to apply eye shadow in my socketty bits rather than on my lid..my eyelids are droopy and 10 yrs older than yours so I need all the help I can get

DebiNewberry · 13/04/2010 21:16

I have sim colouring and I either do a very neutral shadow, one slightly darker than my skin tone, a brown with a gold shimmer or for evening a rose gold sort of colour.

If no make up ever, I would get a tinted moisturiser, mascara, blusher and lip gloss or if that is too much for you, then the rose vaseline is good and cheap. That should do it, you can work up to eyeshadow!

pinksupergirl · 13/04/2010 21:16

I would say that if you don't need foundation then don't start now! I think it can make your skin worse, I've used it for years and started when I was a young teenager desperate to wear make-up and can't go without it now otherwise I look hideous!

How about getting some tips on You tube? then you can actually see how to do it. I bet if you search for 'make-up for beginners' or 'natural make-up' or something then you'd get some tips. I often look on there just to get tips, there's quite a lot of videos on there.

MunchMummy · 13/04/2010 21:43

Thanks everyone, now I just have to work out where you buy tinted moisturisers from. I'm thinking next to the Nivea in the supermarket, but I guess I'm going to be very wrong.

Can I just say Foxy eyeshadow by Clinique is brill for a natural-but-a-bit-glam look - it's subtle beigy-brown with a hint of shimmer, just sweep some on the lower eyelid and it would be hard to make it look overdone.

Elemental · 13/04/2010 21:48

Also (I am a Clinique advert in this thread it appears) Clinque Naturally Glossy mascara in brown/black is fab. It's not like other mascaras in making your lashes harder and obviously made up, it basically makes your lashes look the same but darker, I think it deffo would be the best mascara to start with if you are a make up novice.
