Help me to find a dress for a wedding ~ I haven't a clue!

Ladies this is your brief;

I have two weddings to attend and want to try and use one dress for both (there will not be one single person who attends both except me ) HOWEVER one is church then golf club (ex work mates), the other is registery office then football club (prem) function room (bil).

So also throw into the mix I am a larger lady at the mo with very bigg norks AND am currently unemployed so don't have oddles of cash.

Can anyone meet this challenge? tia

Budget? Size?

BunnyLebowski · 13/04/2010 13:33

I'll help

What dress size are you?

What height are you?

What colours do you look good in?

Any parts of your body you want to hide/show off?

LoveBeingAMummy · 13/04/2010 13:42

oh yeah that might help

Size - 20 depending on material, fit etc you know how it is might be one up or down.

Height - about 5'5", would normally shop in the petite section as have short legs, have also had to adjust straps on dress before

body - have a big belly and norks, above the knee is fine not much higher.

Colours - hmm, I love green, had a couple of 'going to wedding dresses' and they were a mis of colours white with black flowers hot pink flower and ribbon , black brown hot pink, both from debenham.

Budget - if I loved it happy to spend up to £100 (just don't tell dh)

What do you think?

Pref to have straps as will be dancing and also no high necks x

TigerFeet · 13/04/2010 13:47

you are a similar shape to me

i'll stick around and lurk, if you don't mind

if dd2 will allow i shall hunt something out

tethersend · 13/04/2010 13:54

Could you do an 18?

LoveBeingAMummy · 13/04/2010 13:55

I've just gone onto debenhams as typing about the ones i got before made me want to ahve a look and there are some nice ones, grr non of them have straps though.

tigerfeet by all means join in, let's hope we're not going to the same wedding

LoveBeingAMummy · 13/04/2010 13:59

tethersend · 13/04/2010 14:01

or here? here? here?

BunnyLebowski · 13/04/2010 14:03

Ok get ready for the onslaught! Here is a selection of stuff I've found

Really pretty but only available in an 18. I think Phase Eight sizing is generous though?

Lovely colour. The belt will nip you in

This looks really flattering and pretty. You could go for some really bright accessories. But hang on it's ivory - is that a wedding guest nono?

This is elegant. Would look good with heels

A wee bit over budget but lovely style and colour

Can you wear orange?

Ruffle one - again looks very flattering

Black so maybe a bit boring but really nice fit

This caught my eye - really like the print

Love this matalan one but is it not dressy enough?

TigerFeet · 13/04/2010 14:05

this?

tethersend · 13/04/2010 14:06

1 here?

LoveBeingAMummy · 13/04/2010 14:08

WOW guys bear with me while i ahve a look - thanks

OP posts:
LoveBeingAMummy · 13/04/2010 14:20

guys there are suome fab dresses in there, bit worried though becuase of course the one i like the most is the most expensive one lol maybe cause my wedding dress had that sweep across the body thing going on!

OP posts:
LoveBeingAMummy · 13/04/2010 14:27

So i know what i said about the style of dress, these are the ones i like from debenhams that go against what i said

similar to one i have had before

again similar to previous dresses i've had

are you spotting a pattern yet lol

another one

What do you think? I should i be going for something different?

OP posts:
Clure · 13/04/2010 18:17

could you do maxi?

LoveBeingAMummy · 14/04/2010 09:09

Think i might be too short for a maxi?

mumto2andnomore · 14/04/2010 09:24

Been following your thread as Im looking for inspiration too for a wedding this Summer. Just wanted to say how refreshing to see the la redoute one modelled on a lady whos not a size 10,wish more would follow suit.

LoveBeingAMummy · 14/04/2010 13:45

mumto2 - i thought that, they could at least alter the picture via the pc when you select a size

Any comments on the dresses i linked too?

OP posts:
BunnyLebowski · 14/04/2010 14:38

Dress 1 - I really don't like. Strapless is not a good look on curvier girls imo.

Dress 2 - ok but a bit flowery for me and also the exposed back would not be flattering imo.

Dress 3 - see Dress 2

Dress 4 - that style and the black and white looks really dated to me.

Let me have a look for some more

mumto2andnomore · 14/04/2010 14:53

I wondered about how strapless would look too,I like the ruffle one Bunnylebowski linked to,Im a size 16-18 and Im sure that would be something that would look nice and not show too many lumpy bits !

BunnyLebowski · 14/04/2010 15:07

Right here's a few more

Absolutely gorgeous

Lovely and summery

Pretty

Classic

Quite 50's. Would look fab with heels

With a cardie/shrug perhaps

This is nice

Lovely

This looks very flattering but maybe not dressy enough?

[[http://www.johnlewis.com/94006/Style.aspx Oooh this is a similar style but glitzier!}]

Over budget I know but so cute!

Clure · 14/04/2010 15:12

I kind of agree with Bunny although you do need to feel comfortable and happy in what you are wearing, a couple of suggestions which are similar to your selection but maybe not so "large floral" (if you see what I mean!)
red
spot/flower
spotty could be dressed up with fab red shoes/bag
bright tunic style dress
purple asymetric hemline
joe browns, not sure if length too short
blue could be glammed up with silver shoes/accesories

LoveBeingAMummy · 17/04/2010 19:57

Clure I love that asda one, is it not a bit 'boring' though?
