HELP please - brown "liver spots" ???

Just had a quick search but can't see any immediate posts, so apologies if this subject has been done before ...

I'm 54 and not in bad nick (truthfully no wrinkles!) but last 12 months have seen the appearance of pale brown spots on my face - one looks like a large freckle right on the tip of my nose

Now it seems like every week shows signs of others and although normal foundation is covering them for the moment, I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to prevent the patches darkening?

Is a heavier cosmetic concealer my only option? Why do we get these, what I believe are called "liver spots", around a certain age?

There are creams that you can buy that are supposed to attenuate such spots. Maybe you should consult a cosmetic dermatologist?

I have heard CLINIQUE ae doing a sun spot lightener which has good results and takes about a month to work. Sarah Vine reviewed it in The Times and was impressed

I came back from Australia with a face full of freckles, despite using SPF 50. La Roche Posay Active C cream made them all disappear like magic! Highly recommended

There are several Active C creams for sale on the La Roche Posay site, but which one is it?

I think it's age plus sun damage. My mother always told me to slather the sun cream over the backs of my hands (not that I remember, so I'll get them too...).

VerityBrulee · 13/04/2010 10:21

Echt, I can't link from the site, but go to produts, then fine line and wrinkles.

There are different types for dry or combination skin then one with added spf for day time. I used the combination skin one. If you were really serious about getting rid of them I'd use the daytime one and then the other at night.

same problem after coming back from Oz - really bad sun spots on my face got no sympathy from my dermatologist since what was I doing on the beach in Australia in the first place? hadn't I heard of cancer?! urgh!
but they do fade with time - I avoid sun exposure and use cream with aha (alpha hydroxy acid) and good concealer.

SouthDevonDelight · 13/04/2010 12:21

Thanks for all your suggestions, but sadly I have to say these spots are definitely "age related" - not chloasma or as a result of too much sun lately (not sure if they are linked to past 40+ years of sunbathing).

I think I need a product to cover up, or be toxic enough to fade them away !!!

Any other product ideas please?

I had mine burnt off by a dermatologist (privately) after trying loads of creams to no avail. someone on here had had it done so I went and asked. "Cryotherapy" I think it is called. Basically he freezes the top few layers of skin. They turn into a dark flat scab which lasted a couple of days.

Had it done on a Friday afternoon.

Saturday looked horrific so hid in doors.

by sunday parts of the scabs were flaking off and by tuesday just had pinkish patches that could easily be covered by conceler.

couple of weeks later, no scarring at all.

Six months down the line, I wouldn't hesitate to have it done again but I cover my face with sun block just in case.

cost about £150.

Vulgar , can you tell me if this could be done on my back ?? I have very dark freckles their from previous sun damage .
TIA

Fliight · 13/04/2010 19:14

Sorry but have you not considered it could be skin cancer?
Please try and see your GP at least - preferably a dermatologist.

I am concerned by your description, hopefully you have just some sun damage but please do have it checked out.

Vulgar · 13/04/2010 20:23

babbi- i'm sure you could have it done on your back. After all, the skin is a bit tougher there.

A dermatologist will assess risk of skin cancer. He said mine were sun spots. I've noticed I'm getting more small freckles on my fore arms as I've got older despite not sun bathing.
