Anyone had a facial peel?

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 12/04/2010 16:47

It was recommended to me by the owner of a beauty salon when I asked which facial would be good for me. I have horrible open pores. She said it wouldn't be like 10 years younger and the worse side effect would be a tight feeling. I wonder if anyone's had it done and can tell me more?

I have Alpha Beta peels and find them really good. Which kind did she recommend?

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 12/04/2010 16:52

Alpha Beta , does it hurt? do you have to cut your skin off with scissors like on the tv or was she telling the truth? do you look amazing after?

cut your skin off ?!

electra · 12/04/2010 16:56

It doesn't hurt - it just feels a bit 'hot'. The results are fantastic ime - it gets rid of all the dead skin cells and makes your face look youthful. I've just had a course of them because my skin went a bit mad after I had dd3. They are good for spots and blemishes and reduce any marks too.

electra · 12/04/2010 16:57

Oh and if it's your first time they generally don't leave it on for long at all.

pointydog · 12/04/2010 16:59

what is a facila peel?

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 12/04/2010 17:04

you see pointydog you were all horrified and now ... interested. On 10 years younger when they have them some poor woman is left for days with what looks like burnt skin, which they slowly shed a la snake and have to cut the shedding stuff off. Needless to say I've found this a little off putting. Now my beauty woman AND electra tell me this is not so and electra it sounds fab and just what I need for my enormo pores and craggyness. I've been quoted £55 - haven't had a facial or anything for years, so no idea if that's about right. I'll pay it if I get youthful skin likeyou.

so if it doesn't involve burning and sloughing and cutting, what does it involve? Is it a laser thing? Would aapri not do the job if you rub vigorously?

LaurieFairyCake · 12/04/2010 17:12

They work by burning the top layers of skin off - the more radical ones do have layers peeling off over the next week

Remember Samantha in Sex and the City

I would have one when I need it (and take the week off afterwards) but I'm years away from needing it.

pointydog · 12/04/2010 17:17

burning with lasers?

Surely that can't be good for anyone

LaurieFairyCake · 12/04/2010 17:21

No, no - burning with a paste.

Not lasers - tis not star trek

LaurieFairyCake · 12/04/2010 17:22

chemical peel.

though there are laser peels I think but I don't know anything about them at all.

pointydog · 12/04/2010 17:22

I've always thought everyhting was done with lasers on those shows.

What's in teh paste then?

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 12/04/2010 17:29

Never had one. I just tell everyone I am 65 and they are amazed at how youthful I look for my age....

Noblet · 12/04/2010 19:48

I've just started a course of 6 Agera peels (Harley Medical Group - I'm more comfortable with a nurse wielding chemicals around my eyes than a beautician). I initially wanted microdermabrasion but apparently it's no good if you're prone to redness or have any broken capillaries. Had the first one two weeks ago, still flaking a bit but no tightness, redness or soreness. My cheeks are really smooth and old spot scars on my chin have already faded a bit. Plus, it's fruit-based so there's no risk of chemical burns or ending up like Samantha in that episode of SATC. Not that I watch it. Ahem.

fridascruffs · 12/04/2010 19:51

Laser peels possible also- i had one, was good, supposedly reduces pores but you may need more than 1 go for that. i don't have skin peeling but she said it was possible- depends what level they use.

fridascruffs · 12/04/2010 19:51

(cost £60 BTW)

whifflegarden · 12/04/2010 19:57

3 words... GO FOR IT! Facial peels ime are a miracle treatment.

I used to have oily skin, some scarring from spots and visible pores around my nose area. Skin looked fine with make up but I always had to powder frequently.

Long story short, I bought online from America a combination treatment of glycolic acid peel and alpha beta peel. I did it every 6 weeks or so and after 3 months my skin was pretty much flawless. I stopped because was pregnant and scared of the effects. And skin gradually getting oily again

Downside is the peeling of skin can be a little bit unsightly (not too bad though). Pick a time when you don't have to be out too much.

£55 sounds v reasonable.

Revupk · 12/04/2010 20:13

Ive also done a course of Agera peels which were great to help with my acne and scarring- some redness and sensitivity and need to use high factor SPF after treatment.
They started with a low intensity peel and worked up to a higher intensity once my skin could handle it.
I also did a microderm which was also great.

electra · 12/04/2010 22:27

I have combination skin and yes, they do shrink your pores and get rid of the oily T zone. I don't really have to wear much make up any more.

fidelma · 13/04/2010 07:25

Does it not leave your skin more vunrable to the sun ect.?

I would love to look 20 but sadly almost 36 with 4 children.(so i look older!)

I think I will stick with facials.(off to book one as I will need it if you lot are all having peels)

Dollytwat · 13/04/2010 09:05

I got a mini face peel set from boots, so I suppose it's not very strong. But you put some stuff on that feels like sandpaper and massage it in for a minute or two, then some other stuff that feels hot and massage that in for a minute.

It really makes a difference, I do it once a week.

It's only about 30 quid and it's lasted me 6 months so far.

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 13/04/2010 11:24

Right then ladies, you have convinced me I'm going to book it and will report back later.

Hi Ladies

I have had a green peel which had fantastic results but... When the peel is left on your skin gets very very hot! Realistically you can go out for 7 - 10 days as you look as though you have very bad sunburn. Then your skin literally peels in layers off your face but not uniformly so it looks unsightly for a good few days while the peeling process completes. After you look amazing! You will be left with very fresh dewy lovely skin. Minimised pores and scars but you always need to use a SF15+ when going out even on a cloudy day if you want to keep the results long term. This cost me around £200 I think which was worth it.

The other thing I can 100% recommend in its place is Crystal Micro Dermabasion: i.e. Bio-skin Las or Crystal Clear. This is a much less invasive option where you have course of 6 Crystal Peeling Facials every 10-14 days. It is just a tiny bit uncomfortable but quite a nice pampering facial. No down time but no make up over it. These take about an hour a time. You can go back to work if you need to and you can wear eye makeup to take away from an ever so slightly flushed face. The course when I had it was £250 and worth every penny. I will be doing this option again when my finances have improved. Superb results maybe even a tad better then the Green Peel.

If you have the money it's well worth doing. And if you have lots of money and your face is starting to sag the new space age looking Slendertone Face comes highly recommended also.

Hope it helps.

boodleboot · 13/04/2010 11:57

can you do this whilst you be pregnant or best to wait until sproglet arrives?
