Poll. Fat calves (very), leggings (black or dark grey), knee length dress. Oui or non?

I love leggings, I really really do. However, I have never worn them outside the house. I know all the rules about wearing leggings (including not owning a pair if you're bigger than a size 6!) and no cropped tops, camel toes etc, but with a knee length or possibly a weeny bit shorter dress?

If anyone else was asking the above question it would be an emphatic no! But you are all style and beauty and therefore know better than me...

no fat calves and leggings are not nice

waitingforbedtime · 08/04/2010 17:32

It depends how 'fat' - my level of fatness - no up to size 18ish - yes.

Rockbird · 08/04/2010 17:34

Thanks

Afraid not, sorry .

Ah well, I did ask... Better to be told here than have everyone point and laugh

Don't see the problem myself. I think ankle length leggings (definitely not calf length) plus a knee length dress and nice shoes would be a flattering look for a large calved person.

I think you should go for it.

MayorNaze · 08/04/2010 18:13

yes. with nice shoes. pref heels

MarthaFarquhar · 08/04/2010 18:15

I will go against the grain and say it is dependent on the weather.
If you can camoflage the cankle with either an ankle boot or even better a chunky biker boot then fine.

if it's time for the ballet pumps/gladiator sandals then less fine.

Onionpeeler · 08/04/2010 19:37

She didn't say she had cankles! Black leggings that end at the ankle (not mid-way calf) and a knee-length or shorter dress with some nice shoes are definitely slimming.

Rockbird · 08/04/2010 21:28

I don't have cankles. Actually, my ankles and feet are the slimmest part of me But I wonder if that makes it worse. My calves are like ()

It's all relative - what dress size are you?

Rockbird · 08/04/2010 21:34

22 20. Well, 21 really if there is such a thing.

It might depend on your proportions as much as size per se....why not try it on and take a trusted friend with you to give an honest opinion?

You might have to try on a few different dress styles to get the right one; I'm wondering if a tunic style or shift dress might suit you as they can create a nice smooth sihouette. You could team it with some ballet pumps - the type with straight/substantial soles rather than the elasticated types which might unbalance your feet.

I've recently discovered footless tights with dresses. They have the look of leggings, but are a bit neater and less bulky than leggings. M&S do some good ones. HTH

mmm sounds a bit like where I've been going with my dress thread. But then, surely there is an age limit for leggings. I don't care, I'm going to go and try some on anyway.

Rockbird · 08/04/2010 22:06

Oh well I'm screwed then if there's an age limit as well

Thanks everyone, food for thought here. Going to google footless tights...

Your calves sound very SHAPELY to me - go ahead.

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 08/04/2010 22:09

I think unless you are slim and or tall you can get away with leggings during the winter when you tuck them into boots. Assuming you're doing a tunic or dress over them then you do actually 'see' much legging. However once the winter has passed then you have to accept that the legging look isn't going to look great. I've given them up now the weather is too warm for boots. They are lovely to wear though.
