How do you grow out a boy's fringe?

I'd like DS to have shoulder length surf-dude style hair. At the moment it's at that awkward length where it's right in his eyes. It seems to want to fall forwards no matter how many times I push it to the sides. I've tried mousse, and brushing it to the side when wet, but it's determined to hang in front of his eyes and he can't see.

At the moment he's wearing one of my hairclips to keep it out the way, but I'm not sure what I can do when he's out. Do they make masculine hairgrips ?

Does anyone have any ideas? My family keep on about cutting a fringe, but that would make his hair look mullety or 1970s flick style, which isn't really the look I'm after!

well the footballers use a wire hair band.

What does your ds say about it?

SuSylvester · 08/04/2010 18:36

you just go through it

BetaMummy · 08/04/2010 18:39

A lot of boys with surfer-style hair actually have a fringe - have a look at the mini Boden catalogue or website.

overmydeadbody · 08/04/2010 18:40

Just go through it.

The good thing about hair is it grows.

My DS just got used to brushing it off his forhead repeatedly. He does wear hairclips at home sometimes, but never when out.

It is now long enough to stay to the side when it is swept back.

Just poersevere, it is worth it.

How old is your DS?

overmydeadbody · 08/04/2010 18:41

If he's young enough, just stick hair pins in it, even when he's out.

nappyaddict · 08/04/2010 19:06

This is what I'm wondering - my ds is 4 in June. Those of you with long haired DS' have you got pictures? I need inspiration for DS' haircut!

CuppaTeaJanice · 08/04/2010 19:48

He's almost two, so too young to sweep it out of his eyes. He generally sort of peers down his nose through the curtain of hair, but he's bumped into a few things recently so I need to do something about it.

I've just bought some black and dark brown hairclips from the supermarket. I think they'll suit his image a bit better than the turquoise sparkly star he's been wearing all day !

nappyaddict I hope someone does link to some pictures, so I can print them out and show the hairdresser when the time comes for a trim. All the pics I can find seem to be either mullet-like, long and straight like Hanson, or 70s style with flicky sides like something out of the Partridge Family. None of them are quite what I'd envisaged.

CuppaTea at that age just use hair clips or hair pins, not nice to have it in his eyes.

And don't bother with a hairdresser, if you're confidnet with a pair of scissors then the MN haircut works a treat for little boys. I just get DS to lean over the bath, back-comb all his hair, and snip off the ends.

It is more of a Japanese pop star haircut than a long shouler length haircut, but I find it is a nicer style really.

overmydeadbody · 08/04/2010 20:37

omg NappyAddict your DS is already nearly 4?!

Where have the years gone?

Littlepurpleprincess · 08/04/2010 20:40

I've had this problem with DS, (now nearly 4) we perserveared for ages but it just grew longer over his face so we had it cut about shoulder length with a fringe and it actually looks really nice. it's definately that 'surfer dude' look but it's boyish as well (most people thought he was a girl when they met him, when it was long).

Either that or make him wear a hat ALL THE TIME. This worked until he got fed up and took it off. (the hat holds the hair back until its long enough IYSWIM)

pointydog · 08/04/2010 20:54

does your ds want long hair? If so, he'll cope. If not, I don't know why you'd bother

overmydeadbody · 08/04/2010 21:26

He's 2yrs old pointy, he probably doesn't have any opinion on how he wants his hair

CatherineEarnshaw · 08/04/2010 21:27

i use clips or just let it droop its fine - they cope

StephysFamous · 08/04/2010 21:41

Kirby grips! They're tiny so shouldn't be noticed. To match the colour of his hair, obviously.
Wash his hair at night and put him to bed with the grip in and eventually his hair will fall to the side.
It's called "training the fringe".
[insert college was useful after-all emotion here]

Stick a wee bandana on him when he's out - kinda goes with the whole surfer thang...
