trousers for skinny pre-teen dd

dd1 (12 next month) is v skinny (2nd centile for weight) and needs trousers for a guides activity weekend at the end of the month. We need to buy at least 3 pairs of trousers that...

  • stay up when she walks! must have proper adjustable waist, not just a drawerstring that covers 2 inches at the front IYSWIM
  • are cheap (might well not come home knowing dd and her organisational skills!)
  • are not jeans (will get wet and stay wet)

we've tried leggings from Peacocks and Tesco (too lose on waist) and also boys sporty trousers from Peacocks (all fall down as too wide)

We now need to venture off to the big shopping center or shop online. I'd prefer to to have to drag all 4 children round laods of shops trying on trousers that fall off dd1, so any suggestions for where we should start looking?

thanks

please forgive typos and believe me I don't want to drag them all round the shops!

Next most of their trousers have an adjustable waist band. My dd is a lot younger but we have the same problem (she's very skinny) and Next jeans/trousers are the only ones that don't fall down.

H&M are good but only if you have one near you (as they are not online).

H&M have adjustable waistbands.

leggings any good? cheap ones tend to be less generously sized so might be ideal.

bumpybecky · 07/04/2010 14:22

the problem we've had before is that although many shops do adjustable waists for younger girls, once you get to 11 or so they stop and none have the adjusters

Panda, I thought the Peacocks leggings would do the job, they looked slim, but when she tried them on it was comical, very emabarssing to have your clothes falling down and showing knickers!

Will start at H&M when we go to the big shops, thanks for the suggestion

My dd is skinny and it is a nightmare. H & M or Zara are the best at the moment but that is for jeans (they do the adjustable waists in bigger sizes). Also as much as I hate the place, New Look can sometimes fit. I have to buy her school trousers from there.

Zara, Next, Gap and Pumpkin Patch are all possible but none sounds cheap (I'm not expecting all of these clothes to come hom from guide camp!). I'd never have though of Pumpkin Patch, I thought they were babies and toddlers only.

New Look I always forget about as we have one here, but it doesn't do the teen range any more. The big town(!) is Milton Keynes, so has everything big store wise. The New Look there has teen clothes, so will try there too.

Thanks for the suggestions

Could you try some younger age trousers but maybe get away with them as 3/4 length if she is wearing with wellies that might work.

My dd has a an aged 8 skirt for example because it fits round the waist.

sorry, didn't read the OP properly!

maybe some tracky bottoms that you could pull the elastic up tighter in?
