Quite thick waisted - belt or not?

I'm 5'5.5" (don't forget the .5 ) and a size 14, I've got 'childbearing' hips according to my last midwife! and although I do have curves, and I'm not particularly overweight, I don't have a tiny waist

I really love the look of those 50's dresses that go in at the waist and are worn with a big belt, but I'm wondering if a belt would flatter my waist and make it look smaller, or just draw attention to the fact that I don't have Jessica Rabbits shape!

I tend to wear a lot of long line, tunic type tops but I'm wondering if I should steer away from those and go for something closer fitting, again with a belt.

I don't suppose Gok Wan is lurking on here, by any chance?

I think anything that shows off your figure rather than shapeless clothes is going to get gok wans approval.

How about spanx of something to give you a waist and then a thick belt to pull it in even tighter and show it off.

I'm the same, I regularly fake a waist

I would go for it. I do the 'fifties' regularly. I also have quite a shapeless frame, so tend to wear a light/er colour dress and a dark belt - not the other way round. It definitly helps with shape.

Thanks very much everyone. I will have a play with the belts I've got and see how it goes. It just feels odd to be drawing attention to something that I'm not happy with iyswim?

Soopermum, didn't think of Spanx. Will have to have a look!
