short, fat and pregnant!

Hello,
This is my first foray into Style and Beauty, largely because I am neither stylish nor beautiful
I'm really struggling to find anything that doesn't resemble a bin bag to fit me at the moment. I'm about a size 18, but expect to get bigger as I'm 15 weeks pg. I have ridiculously small shoulders which means that normal cut tops become low cut on me, and strappy tops just fall straight down.
This is the kind of thing I would like to buy at the mo
soul cal

but, of course, it only goes up to a size 14

Any suggestions, style goddesses?

Uggs bathbaby? 'Cuz nothing says class more than a chunky bird in Uggs!

wastwinsetandpearls · 05/04/2010 14:43

That is a little uncalled for skihorse, and that is from someone who would not be seen dead in uggs whatever her size.

skihorse · 05/04/2010 14:48

No, it's not "uncalled" for, it's an opinion. I am myself a "chunky bird" and I abhor Uggs, why the heck shouldn't I be allowed to say so? Are you annoyed that I said this or are you looking to have a pop at me over some other issue?

skihorse · 05/04/2010 14:51

OP states that she "feels" short, fat and possibly dumpy - on which planet do we put women who feel like that in to such items of clothing? Would you also recommend a puffa jacket and harem pants?

wastwinsetandpearls · 05/04/2010 14:52

I don't have a clue what you are talking about. There are ways of expressing an opinion without being rude.

wastwinsetandpearls · 05/04/2010 14:53

I am not disagreeing with you, there are ways to dress to suit your figure. Being a fat ugly bird I know all about that. I just think you were harsh.

skihorse · 05/04/2010 14:54

If you don't understand what I'm saying you are always free to ask for an explanation and I can break it down in to simple words and concepts for you.

wastwinsetandpearls · 05/04/2010 14:57

I am not sure why you are being chippy with me. The OP wanted advice not a row on her thread. I am going to walk the dog, in my wellies not UGGS.

pixiestix · 05/04/2010 16:08

Oi, stop that fighting! The revolution will never get going if we turn on each other!!

I love my Uggs because they are so comfy, but do agree that they are not always flattering!

nannyj · 05/04/2010 17:39

I was about a size 18 when i got pregnant and mamas and papas were the best shop for me, although i'm not short so it may differ for you. Their clothes kind of fall apart after a while but i liked the style of them. Next is good too and tend to come up smaller than their normal clothes. I kept it pretty simple lots of jeans over the bump and plain tops.

Bathbaby · 05/04/2010 17:40

Also I think that once you get to my stage of pregnancy (almost 40 weeks!) that the size of the bump balances out the possible negative chunkiness of the Ugg-style boot! I may have to reconsider my "look" now!

victoriascrumptious · 05/04/2010 18:13

I will be putting some size 14 and 16 maternity clothes on ebay soon (I am 5 foot). No promises that they are the height of style tho. Am I allowed to post the link here when I have listed them?

victoriascrumptious · 05/04/2010 18:15

Soul cal Hawaiian dress in a size 16 here:

might buy it myself

June2009, it took ages to lose! That's probably not what you wanted to hear

It wasn't a massive priority in the first six months, and so I managed to lose... nothing! If you can breastfeed well it'd probably be quicker. By the time he was 16 months old I had lost all but 10lbs, which put me at a normal enough weight, and I had been making big efforts for about 6 months then, so I suppose you could say 6 months of actual effort to lose the 3 and a bit stones. Then I got pregnant again, and in the first three/four months I have gained at least a stone (don't dare look now). The thing is, I know how hard it will be to do all over again, but I can't stop eating! And honestly I normally am not that bothered about food, I just become an eating monster in pregnancy. My ex-boss likened me to a 'tank rolling down the corridor' in my first preg. Nice.

Anyway, sorry, my long digression on weight will not help the revolution . Back to clothing - I haven't got a clue what to do.

ChunkyPickle · 06/04/2010 05:11

I'm also overseas at the moment - so I'm living in some tunic length long-sleeved t-shirts I got in Dorothy Perkins before I left, and some absolutely humongous jeans I bought when I was bloated at the beginning.

Very happy with the tunic t-shirts (vest underneath as they're pretty wide necked), but the jeans are doing nothing for me..

Why is it that normally there's nothing in DP that I want, then they strike it just right with something so simple!

I'm a long term Bravissimo fan for underwear, but these soft cup bras are a bit of a nightmare - still haven't found a size that feels right - I think I'm actually going to have to visit a shop and enlist their help.

alle01 · 06/04/2010 07:48

i bought my maternity wardrobe from another lady in ebay, and except for a couple of nasties she added in everything fit and quite nice, saved me the stress of looking around and visiting shops, which i hate anyway, not easy to find clothes at size 22 and 5'2 i used to be, luckily i got down to size 16 before i was pregnant, i didn't get much weight but i don't have a definite lump at 37 weeks, and annoyingly, everybody keeps telling me i don't look pregnant, (just fat), anyway, ebay is cheaper as well, you're not gonna use it for long,... and you're buying from someone your size, you can message them before you buy to make sure you won't have fitting problems, i'll be selling my mat clothes that way when i'm done with them, maybe get my money back, or some at least,... but remember, they're just clothes, after you have the baby and can wear your normal clothes again, you're not even gonna remember that tent you needed in the end,...

pixiestix · 06/04/2010 09:09

Ooooh, thanks for the Soul Cal link Victoria - I'm pretty sure I'll get into a 16 ok. Love that dress!

Left M&S close to tears today after humiliating attempt to buy first maternity bras destroyed by rolls of back-flab, apparently spontaneously generated in last couple of weeks. 5'3" and size 12/14 normally, but have gained 5lb and am only 7 weeks.

Current uniform is dark bootleg jeans with a bit of stretch (2 pairs, from charity shops, both under a fiver and plan on just looking for the next size up whenever I need to, till bump shows up) plus crisp-ish long-ish white shirts. I stick my blue fitted mac over it to go out (open - buttons now under too much strain when closed) and it all looks relatively streamlined over the bulk.

Bring on the revolution!

Nymphadora · 11/04/2010 10:50

I got some great trousers in New York last week. From Pea in a Pod if they come up on eBay.they are cropped combats & cropped jeans. Are a bit long (but only a bit) and the stretchy bit is much nicer material than I have seen here. You could probably hear the sighs when I tried them on! Fingers crossed they'll get me through the summer.

Will still need more clothes though so bring on the revolution!
