Jack Wills - do you shop there?

Looked in today for the first time with DD (14) who loved EVERYTHING.

I advised her to study the look and maybe emulate it from other (less pricey shops).

Please tell me that I am not being too mean/frugal but £225 for a blazer and £69 for a hoody is surely pushing most budgets.

I think I wandered through a shop (in Brighton?) and was appalled at the prices. I don't know the quality but it's not that stylish, in fact some of it is[positively...braying.

overweightnoverdrawn · 04/04/2010 00:37

Private school yuppies with i phones wear JW

BusyMummy78 · 04/04/2010 07:59

Wait for the sale prices are much cheaper e.g. shirts £34, polo shirts £24, jackets £69.

ABetaDad · 04/04/2010 08:22

My wife dragged me in there. I am 47 and I bought things. I bought cardigans and jumpers that I wear with jeans. I think this makes me look cool but am secretly worried it makes me look sad and desperate.

In my defence, I did think the music in the shop was far too loud and I couldn't believe the girl (she was a girl) was actually old enough to be allowed to handle money.

Fliight · 04/04/2010 08:25

have got some of their lounge pants from the sale (30 odd quid, very very nice) and a couple of sale tops too. And one shirt. oh and some skinny cords.

The quality is a bit hit and miss, some great, some dire - and its all made in China of course.

It is very very yuppie private school kids imo.

Never even look at the regular price stuff, only sale and that is pushing it.

paddingtonbear1 · 04/04/2010 08:28

I got a few things from ebay. Nice quality, but not worth the full price.

lovesunnydays · 04/04/2010 09:27

what a relief....I did think it was VERY private school "I want it" kind of shop. Needless to say there were lots of browsers in there and not alot of real punters.

Interesting about the 'made in China' thing as we had a discussion in the shop as to why it was so expensive and I (stupidly) assumed it was not made by child labour/Chinese made...how naiive I am?

Needless to say we are not of the polo playing/private school chump/yuppie brigade and thank god as the pressure to keep up with other kids wearing that would be heartbreaking.

This is DDs school's alternative uniform. Just before Christmas we went to the outlet store in Portsmouth where it is all a more accptable price and she got jeans that would have cost £100+ for £20 and a few other bits. It is good quality stuff but that's not why they want it!

deaddei · 04/04/2010 15:23

DD and I went to thr Richmond one on Thursday- what a strange experience. It tries far too hard to be "hip" in its shop design and it's too preppy and "rich kid goes casual" for me.
But then what do I know? I asked in Hollister if they'd had a power cut....

lovesunnydays · 04/04/2010 21:32

ha ha deaddei, I find myself genuinly asking really numpty uncool grown up things like that too!

Told daughter all of your comments but she is still keen...oh dear, what have I bred here.

we are a bit more Primark and H and M here.

Feel such a disappointment . non

i didnt think you were actually allowed to buy anything unless you were under 25?

fabhead · 04/04/2010 22:04

my nieces and nephews love this shop, they are 11-17 and have iphones tho not private school - their mother says the quality is v good but one of them had some stripey socks on that I admired until I heard they were £30 odd! I just could not pay that for a pair of socks ... There's one where I live, which I had never noticed until they told me about it, but I'm too scared to go in now in case I like anything.

I think I am a bit too old for this - too aware of what else I could buy with my hard-earned dosh - must remember not to take my dc in there, too young yet but they live in an area where they all wear it ....

And I thought Boden was pricey - come back, all is forgiven!

Pineberry · 04/04/2010 22:07

my daughter wastes money in there
good in sale though

Quattrocento · 04/04/2010 22:09

I had a Jack Wills thread here

DD adores the stuff. I think it is overpriced.

Ouch at private school yuppies with iphones - bit too close to the truth, that one, as DD does indeed go to a private school and also has an iphone

janeite · 04/04/2010 22:09

God no - and my daughters don't either. It is for teenagers with no style, whose parents have more money than sense imho. Ridiculous prices and not v nice.

Bumperliciouzzzzzz · 04/04/2010 22:12

Good god no. That's where all the local ladies college girls shop, with their flicky hair with no discernible parting, saggy jogging bottoms with Uggs, and Chanel make-up at 16.

Pineberry · 04/04/2010 22:17

not exclusively private school at ALL

just because it is pricey - private school parents have spent it all on fees

It is designed for 16 year old independent school kids. DS bought some stuff in the sale when he was 16 but now he is 18 he has moved on. The catalogue is an amazing document - very much designed for teenage Rahs and the clothes are all made in China (probably in the same sweat shops as are used by Gap or even Primark) but sold at astronomical prices.

Pineberry · 04/04/2010 22:21

oh yes it is - says made in Salcombe or some such and then small print malaysia

bobbiewickham · 04/04/2010 22:34

Maybe it's a bit too late, and I've had a bit too much wine, but...

if you lot were saying Primark was for chavvy kids from comprehensives, we'd be rightly up in arms.

Just saying...

lovesunnydays · 04/04/2010 22:35

certainly is overpriced.

Bumper - think I might have been in your local branch (Cotswold spa town?), did seem well sited for the rich pickings there.

Lots of mini flared skirts, hoodies and stripy blazers. Very much for the polo set imo.

OP posts:
Pineberry · 04/04/2010 22:44

not polo set round us

every school girl fee paying or not - draped in jw

dexter73 · 04/04/2010 22:46

My dd and lots of her friends wear it and they go to the local comprehensive...
