Favourite pair of black jeans looking faded - can I dye them black again to make them look new?

Or could that be disastrous? They're still in good condition - just look a bit old.

Any tips for how to do a good dye job? Have never dyed anything before....

Thanks.

i use the dylon dye, black velvet.. it will restore your jeans to their former glory. have used it many times with no problem. i need some indigo for my other jeans that are also still v wearable but washed out

Yes. Use Dylon machine dye. Wash the jeans - don't dry, and bung in machine wth dye and salt - it's all in the instructions. Have done this with black and indigo jeans, faded towels, sheets I was bored of, T shirts....

Thanks for tips.

Now a few novice questions:

  1. Where can I find dylon dye
  2. Do I put dye and clothes into the washing machine?
  3. Why salt?

I imagine all this info is on the pack......

Anything to be wary of?

Woolworths Wilkinsons/John Lewis/HobbyCraft...

I think so.

To set the dye(so it doesn't all run out on washing).

Tesco sell Dylon Black Velvet. From memory you dont need salt just bung in the washing machine with dry clothes.

OzMama22 · 04/04/2010 12:45

Just be sure NOT to do a load of whites in the machine for the next load!! Do a load of darks and you should be fine!

notjustapuppymum · 04/04/2010 17:02

Run the machine on empty with a cup full of bleach in afterwards. I did this the other week and revived a fading pair of skinny jeans and a dress.

WARNING - After you've done the dyeing and run an empty wash, you may still need to check the door seal - the dye collects in the folds & the wash may not get rid of it - I had to clean it by hand.

I have dued loads of things in my washing machine and never had a problem. There is a dylon dye especially for washing machines that only comes in black, navy and chocolate and it already has salt etc in it. It is idiot proof.

shopalot · 04/04/2010 19:51

here HTH

DrivenToDistraction · 04/04/2010 19:55

Yes, the door seal indeed. DO clean it by hand afterward, there can be quite a bit of dye left in there.

schroeder · 04/04/2010 20:15

Yes it works a treat, I used wash and dye from asda on dh's jacket and it came up a treat. I would advise using colour catchers for a few washes afterwards and doing dark loads to start with. I also wiped the door seal with milton and then washed the cloth on its own on a hot wash as the dye really sits in the folds.
good luck

Am happy to see that dying the jeans may be the solution.

Next novice question......are there varying shades of black dye (and if so, which would you recommend?), or are they all virtually the same/one as good as the next?
