i have really curly, thick, frizzy hair, which i used to straighten but in the last few months have given in and worn it curly.

trouble is, i have bought no end of products that promise to de frizz and give me lovely glossy curls but not found anything that great so far!

i use kerastase oleo relax shampoo, aussie leave in conditioner, kerastase oleo relax serum followed by frizz ease curl mousse.

but i still end up with a bit of frizz and crispy curls!

my hair has the potential to be really nice i think as its in good condition despite the fact i now have highlights, and goes in to ringlets when it dries but i just want a product that will keep it in nice, defined, glossy ringlets!

i am asking too much, arent it

No, you're not!

Come and read this thread

mummee09v · 29/03/2010 15:49

thank you born to folk - but i have tried this and ended up with horrible, dirty looking hair, which was still frizzy and awful and my hair and scalp felt so dirty it itched

i think it does work for some people but not for others!

Also failed with CG method -I like Aveda Be Curly or a potion from Boots called twist and curl not sure who makes it one of the big name crimpers- it's good for ringlets. Also the old tip of changing your shampoo and conditioner every few weeks helps. Also if you are not keen on fizz ease a wee bit of ordinary conditioner will tame frizzy ends on dry hair- oh and eat your crusts

mummee09v · 29/03/2010 16:53

oooh thanks bebe - will try some.

I love Bumble & Bumble curl creme: it's not cheap but it's the only thing that's really worked for me, and I've got a cupboard full of every single curl cream going.

mummee09v · 29/03/2010 17:29

lol wildfig your cupboards sound like mine

does it make your hair greasy though, some curl products i find are a bit oily.

d:fi d:struct moulding paste good for separating curls

BornToFolk · 29/03/2010 21:29

Ah well! It is not for everyone.

My favourite styling product is the Umberto Gianni Curl Friends gel. It holds really well and does not give you crispy curls.

mummee09v · 30/03/2010 10:58

just out of interest BTF.... I take it it worked for you? how long did it take and what products do u use etc?

I also have very thick curly prone to frizzy hair. What works for me is aussie shampoo or pantene . I wash and condition every other day before I go to bed , use V05 curl up mousse and defuse it to dry and sleep on it.

If I am going out I wash the night before then I just wash with water alone and reapply mousse. This seems to work and stop the crunchiness.
In the morning I use a bit of mousse to get rid of frizz.

I have tried all those keratase things and curl creme but I find them too sticky. hths abit

Sorry I'm late in on this, but had to respond.
After years of research my formula is: Any shampoo (it's the conditioner that counts) Charles Worthington leave in conditioner followed by Frizz Ease Serum (extra strength-the blue one) followed by Toni and Guy Twist it Curl Balm. All available from Boots.

Then use a diffuser on medium heat/speed. Scrunch hair into diffuser and leave a few secs than move to new bit. Try not to touch your hair too much and don't dry it fully.

I have yet to find a hairdresser who can dry my hair without either giving me an afro or leaving me looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards.

willybreeder · 30/03/2010 19:46

I've found any men's styling wax/paste (really thick & gunky texture) works brilliantly. Put on damp hair and twist hair round your fingers and leave to dry, once dry-ish tip your head upside down and gently fluff up then don't touch again! Diffusers never work with me, I'm used to leaving the house with damp hair!
The next day if your not washing it smooth through Sebastian's potion 9. This takes away that bale of hay look and brings it back to looking like the day before.
Let us know what methods work for you after all this advice!

llareggub · 30/03/2010 19:55

What SarahAggie said.

Hand cream is great between washes, too. It defrizzes hair beautifully.

Squiz · 30/03/2010 20:26

I like Paul Mitchell leave in conditioner and have used Joico products with quite good results - the curl creme is good. I have run out of all products at the moment and my hair seems to be a big triangle! Lots of people recommend the pink tub of curl gunk from Boots but my hair justs feels sticky and yuk afterwards - although that's maybe cos I only wash my hair twice a week.

How have you got your curly hair cut (styled? Does this word apply to curly hair?) This seems to be a major problem -to layer or not to layer and what is a good length.

ByTheSea · 30/03/2010 20:30

Try Boots curl creme - it is very cheap and works for me. I also have very curly, very thick, dryish frizz-prone hair and have used a lot of very expensive products over the years. Frizz-ease doesn't work well on my hair.

mummee09v · 30/03/2010 21:31

tried the curlcreme - made it horrible, sticky and dirty looking

I asked my curly friend (who has beauteous hair) about haircare recently on behalf of DD1, and she said to try not to wash it more than once a week, and scrunch in conditioner
to style it - reckons she's tried everything else and conditioner wokrs best. She aslo said nnot to brush it, just comb while conditioning and finger-comb.

BornToFolk · 31/03/2010 09:28

Yes, CG works for me but I had to ease into it!

I used to use a lot of Frizz Ease styling products so I cut these out first (all that silicone is really bad for your hair and also means that you need a harsh shampoo to get rid of it). I mostly use the Umberto Gianni gel which has no silicones. I also use a bit of pink curl creme underneath. The trick with that is to use a tiny amount and to rub is between your hands before applying.

Then I cut down on the amount of shampoo I used until I was just using a tiny amount, then cut that out and use Original Source Mint and Tea Tree conditioner to wash with instead. This is really nice as it makes your scalp feel all tingly and clean.

I used a Naked shampoo 2-3 times a week (I wash every day).

I've yet to find a really good conditioner but I've just ordered an expensive one from the British Curlies site so I'm hoping that works!

Of course, there are many things you can do in order to manage your hair like deep-conditioning, air-drying and splits cutting. As for sulfate free shampoo, it has pros and cons. It doesn’t irritate the scalp, rarely causes allergies and contains more natural oils, but it requires more than one wash if you have long or thick hair, doesn’t help to alleviate dandruff and most of these types of shampoos do not lather well, so it can be difficult to know if you’ve cleaned your hair well enough. If you want to find out more and choose a proper shampoo, I can recommend to check therighthairstyles.com/sulfate-free-shampoo/. Sulfate free shampoo can improve your hair health, so it can help your hair to grow faster.

I use Aveda Black Malva and Shampure conditioner your-style-guide.com/best-hair-gel-for-curly-hair/ (pureology works wonderfully but costs bank so I use it twice a month). I have typical thick curly Indian hair and found I have to use a leave in conditioner. I tried expensive stuff that just made my hair puffy. I decided to do what my mom used to do and that is coconut oil after I brush it, then brush it in, and then apply my pomade. Since I have bern using coconut oil my hair has been soft, shiny, and relaxed.

Conditioner left in and Boucleme styling gel is working for me at the moment after a trip to a specialist curly hairdresser. (very thick, very curly hair). Stopped washing with shampoo but I usually do a conditioner wash and rinse, then detangle with more conditioner and leave that in, scrunch some of the wet out, run the Boucleme gel through it and over the top, then air dry, sometimes I finish off with a hairdryer. Then scrunch the gel out and lift the hair.
