Just wanted to know general opinions on where does the best baby clothes - quality, price, washability, durability etc, especially on all the essentials - vests, babygrows etc?

Thanks

I find M&S and Primark to be very good for the quality, price and size ratio. The other trick is hand me downs, you save so much money that way.

I liked Next for babygrows and vests.
For all the pretty things GAP is my fave!

CuppaTeaJanice · 24/03/2010 17:25

The majority of stuff we had was secondhand, but I always looked out for Next babygrows. Really nice soft fabric and flappy over bits at the cuffs so you don't have to bother with scratch mittens.

Check out NCT Narly New Sales though, you'll find loads of bargains there!

Has anyone tried the baby stuff from Matalan. It looks very nice, but am never sure of the quality from there....

Matalan baby stuff washes terribly. Primark is good for cheap baby clothes though.

I love Mini Mode (Boots) stuff when buying new - but mostly buy from ebay.

accessorizequeen · 05/04/2010 20:54

The gap/next/m&s vests/babygros I've had for 3 ds's have all lasted the best, and half the gap stuff was off ebay. H&M also highly recommended, I think it's really good quality for the price. I think the M&S vests are the best ever, agree with CuppaTea about Next babygros too.
Bottom of my list is mothercare, clothes from there just don't last, the tops stretch etc awful! Have a few things from matalan not bad but don't generally like the style anyway.

I would also recommend the NCT. Also ask friends if they are thinking of getting rid of their baby clothes. I was delighted when a friend hinted this to me. She got loads of free clothes and I can get in the loft again.

sweetnitanitro · 05/04/2010 21:10

NCT sales are amazing, I get all my DD's clothes from there. When they are babies they are in one size for such a short amount of time it's easy to find second hand stuff in good condition.

Make sure you sharpen your elbows before you go, the sales can get quite 'busy' get there early!

Brand new stuff, we had some John Lewis babygrows that were lovely and lasted ages and the Sainbos were surprisingly good for the price. M&S and Tesco shrank massively. Tesco vests seem to be OK though.

hellymelly · 05/04/2010 21:16

I only buy petit bateau underwear and pyjamas for my dds and always have ,as they fit really well on my slender girls and they never shrink or change shape, and they go on and on.You can re-sell on ebay when they grow out of them too if you want. They are expensive but after several things from gap and m+s getting shorter and wider after washing I stuck with PB.

Is NCT online? out in the sticks here!

Tomten · 01/05/2010 16:36

Cambridge Baby (they are online btw) have a range of natural wool clothes that I buy for my daughter and have bought since she was a baby. They are amazing as they don't really get dirty nor do they pick up smells and they last for ages and ages. Plus they are amazingly breatheable and regulate body temperature very well. You do have to be very careful when you wash them ie not to throw them in with normal washing. They also have a range of wool sleeping bags that have been a life saver! Hope this helps!

mothercare and next for baby grows and vests.

jemart · 01/05/2010 16:58

If you mean to buy new I have found that Next is good for basics like vests, socks and tights, nightwear etc. and some of the clothes can be quite good value. Mothercare also do good baby basics.
Gap are very good on both quality and fit for clothing but I would not bother with their baby vests again as they are too thin.

If you are not restricted budgetwise then I would wholeheartedly recommend Plastisock and Katvig. Very cool designs and generally quite unisex. Washes well, lasts ages but does cost a bit more - I buy to fit my eldest child and pass down to the other two.

Ebay is great for getting "new with tags" bargains. And secondhand of course

sungirltan · 01/05/2010 17:13

agree re next stuff. i hate next for many reaosns but i cant lie. their baby gear lasts and washes well.

i get piles of dd's gear handed down from my god daughter (some was handed down to her from her cousin) so i feel like i am becoming expert in the durability of baby clothes. i'm sorry but primark stuff will not last 2 kids. next and m&s will last into 3 kids (possibly 4 as i am passing on to my neice).

i also have in good nick, gear from mini mode (boots), pumpkin patch and the designers at debenhams ranges (not as over priced as you'd think)

mothercare - depnds on what you buy there - i was v dissapointed with how faded the sleepsuits were after a few washesv and wouldn't buy them again. fwiw i think mothercare is a bit over priced for the quality.

nct is online to see where the next baby sales are have look here

Tocca · 01/05/2010 17:27

M&S every time for basic babygrows and vests, washes well, will last through a couple of dc if you buy plain white (nicest anyway) no scratchy edges.

nicolamumof3 · 02/05/2010 12:57

agree next babygrows lovely and great bright designs. also their vests. M&s vests lovely and soft.

general clothes my faves on high st. are Next, JL, GAP, M&S and H&M online i love toby tiger, NAS, JoJo

Bobbylala · 20/05/2010 08:24

If you want something a bit different from all the high street stuff I can recommend www.popkid.co.uk I ordered one of their monster tee shirts and got my nephew's name printed on it.

Was a great present for my sister, as it stood out from all the other babywear she's been given. [I think the fact it had her son's name printed on it made all the difference!]

She's now gone on to order 2 more tees after forcing me to give up the web address! Look like a small local firm but the quality was awesome.
