So whats the size cut off for skinny jeans/trousers?

I'm somewhere between a size 16 and 14 depending on the brand, 5'7" tall and early 40's. This winter I've begun to wear skinny black trousers or leggings with knee high boots and long tops, which has quickly become my new uniform. However I was looking at the thread about what shoes to wear with skinnies and it occurred to me that I'm not sure that they'll look so good without the boots. There's not that much leg actually visible between the bottom of the tunic top and the top of the boots. So be honest, would someone like me get away with a full length showing of skinny leg or should I give up and do unfashionable bootlegs?

No - give up and go back to bootcuts for the spring/summer. Sorry.

I am a 12 and have heavy thighs and calfs and just look shocking in skinnies without boots.

SugarTits · 18/03/2010 11:14

deloola - you see that's what MN is for, friends would say 'no, you look fine' whilst secretly thinking you look like you've got bananas for legs.

Try a pair of topshop Marthas if you don't want to go back to bootcuts. I find they balance me out a bit more.

thelunar66 · 18/03/2010 11:19

Full length skinnies on show are for size 10 and under.. actually 10 is pushing it a bit too

tulpe · 18/03/2010 11:22

Try Boden's straightleg jeans too. I have "athletic" legs (I'm being kind to myself there ) and I find either the Boden ones or Top Shop Marthas are far more flattering than skinnies. My preference is the Boden simply because they have a slightly higher rise (without being too high) and therefore no muffin toppage or bum cleavage issues when sitting

vinauchocolat · 18/03/2010 11:28

Hmm I think skinnies are more flattering than bootcut jeans. I used to wear bootcut jeans all the time- and I'm 4 inches shorter than you- and I look at pictures and I looked awful. I recommend straight leg jeans if you are in doubt. I like james jeans, or paige, they are very bottom-flattering but a bit expensive. Haven't tried topshop marthas.

TrillianAstra · 18/03/2010 11:30

When they look horrible, which could be a size 8 or a size 16 depending on height and quality of legs.

SugarTits · 18/03/2010 11:38

Brilliant - am ordering the Boden ones asap.

You are lucky you are taller than average, so in the right clothes you won't look big. But skinnies. NO honey NO. Not if you're size 16-18. Not leggings or Jeggings either.

RunningOutOfNames · 18/03/2010 19:04

SugarTits (feel a bit odd typing that)

boden.co.uk/dt gives 20% off at the moment

SugarTits · 18/03/2010 19:14

Magie00 - height does help, tbh most people guess me at a 12 whereas more 14/16. I've only done the leggings thing where there's very little legging showing between hem of top and top of boot iyswim. I now undertake not to do any full length skinny/legging type garment until I am skinny myself.

Being tall does help. (I am short 10/12, but can look positively dumpy with little effort) I really like straight leg jeans, and agree Topshop Marthas are good, they are roomy, so try them on - you might need to go down a size! I think you still could get away with skinny jeans as long as you have good legs.

basildonbond · 18/03/2010 20:11

I'm 5'7", size 10-12 (depending on make) and mid 40s ... hell would have to freeze over before I'd be seen in public in skinny jeans without boots ... sorry .. it's also an age thing as well, I think - for a woman in her 40s to be skinny enough to wear skinnies she'd probably end up looking really gaunt ...

geordieminx · 18/03/2010 20:17

m&s indigo skinnies are a lot kinder, more straight than skinny, get rave reviews and are reduced from £19.50 to £12 just now - worth a punt

MinnieMalone · 18/03/2010 20:39

I'm 5'11 and a 14 and wear skinnies all the time. Bootcuts are for grannies!

ladylush · 19/03/2010 17:51

I am 5ft 10 and wearing some size 14 skinnies today with a boyfriend cardi and ballet pumps. I think I look fine

CaptainPicardsPineapple · 19/03/2010 17:57

I'm 5'9, a 14 and wear skinnies. I think I look OK, not too hideous anyway.

Eve4Walle · 19/03/2010 18:17

Slim-fit ankle skimmers are much better than skinnies if you are a bit of an apple shape but have good, slim legs like me.

M&S do some lovely ones for £20 in a dark denim colour which is very flattering. I wear mine with ballet pumps.

ninah · 19/03/2010 18:19

at 5'7 I'd say 10 abs max

mysocalledlife · 19/03/2010 18:22

God look at all you lot you tall people

Yeah if your tall and can get away with a lot more. If your 5ft 3 like me I think skinny jeans are a no unless you're a size 8 and wear big heels.

madhairday · 19/03/2010 18:31

Oooh they look great geordie but none left in stock
Might try my local M and S. I have slightly chunkier legs so might work better than skinnies/leggings which I will not wear without long tops and knee length boots.

SuSylvester · 19/03/2010 18:33

about a size 26

wheere what you want fgs

whenskiesaregrey · 19/03/2010 18:36

I think it definetly depends on how solid/ wobbley your legs are...

ladylush · 19/03/2010 21:05

I've got the M+S Limited Collection ones and they fit well - in the sale at the moment (though grey which is not for everyone)

SugarTits · 29/03/2010 14:05

Just wanted to report in that I bought the M&S £12 straightleg jeans on Saturday and when I got home the Boden straight leg ones had also arrived.

I've worn both over the weekend and can honestly say that although the M&S ones are ok, the Boden ones win hands down. The lack of detailing on the M&S let them down. I bought them in both a 16 and a 14 as I'd got the bootleg version a few months ago and found the waist stretched. The 14 fitted better, but even still was baggy around the waist at the middle of the back - I suspect this is due to my rather full bottom .

The Boden ones have a much better fit in the leg and are uber flattering for someone who is no stick - so I do feel that they are my new best wardrobe friends. Obviously the Boden's are more expensive £49 - although I found a code and went through Quidco so paid about £41.

Will be keeping both, but the M&S will be backups.

Thanks for all the help ladies, am hoping that I now manage to look 'on trend' but not mutton.
