Those people from salons who stop you in the street to "ask you about your hair"...

Does this actually work as a sales technique? It annoys the hell out of me every time! To me it feels like a stranger interrupting you in public to point out that your that your hair looks rubbish.

Anyone here actually switch to the hairdressers in question after an encounter in the street like this? Does anyone else find it irritating?

I think exactly the same as you - they're stopping me because my hair is so awful, so I just ignore them because they're rude and judgemental. Or that's what my head is telling me anyway.

i can honestly say that noone has ever come up to me promoting a salon to tell me how bad my hair looks

so either that says that

a)my hair is every inch the perfect 'do

or

B)they are too stumped and are at a loss as to what to suggest to improve my horrendous hair

either way...

bumpybecky · 17/03/2010 13:11

PandaEis I was about to post exactly the same thing!

In my case it's B....

hi Ei, hope you're ok!

SkaterGrrrrl · 17/03/2010 13:14

To me its a horrible approach because it preys on your insecurities and pressures you by implying you look bad and need help.

It immediately makes me feel self conscious while I'm going about my business. I may have just aced a deal in a meeting but now someone in the street has just called into question: Is my hair/ appearance good enough?

Would love to know if anyone has actually taken up an offer like this, as chatting to my female friends they all find it off- putting!

My hairdresser told me that when they are training they are told to go out and grab someone with a certain sort of hair to praticse on. So if that day's hair is curly or straight or layered or long- they will look for people with the right sort of hair to work on.

I got stopped four times once in Covent Garden and was pratically in tears by the end as I thought my hair must look so terrible! My hairdresser's take on it was that they must all be from the same school and I must have had the "right" hair.

Would help if they explained this though!

11 years ago a friend I were in Knightsbridge and a lady came and offered us both free hair cuts as the salon was quiet and she didn't want her staff doing nothing. Never crossed my mind she thought our hair was a mess - I think she just wanted her staff working and the chance to get potential new clients.

I've been stopped several times. My answer always is "Why would I want to go to your salon when your own hair is so awful?" Which it generally is IMHO.
