I've had such a fab response from MN recently (other thread) that I am now ready to reveal a secret I said I never would!!

OLIVE OIL!!

Works brilliantly on my highlighted wavy/curly hair. You hardly need any (20p piece size if that). Avoid doing your roots but I find it defines my curls in a really natural non crispy way and also because I've chosen a light coloured oil it adds a nice sheen to the blonde bits (and possibly even brings them out a bit more).

Much better than Frizz Ease (where I would need almost a whole bottle every time!!), cheaper and more natural.

My hair is thick and reasonably coarse so dont know what would happen for people with fine hair..??

Good luck (and dont choose an olive oil with garlic etc in it!!)

For fine hair, the orange kerastase leave-in conditioner is hard to beat.

Pricey though.

Seagull, do you put it on wet or dry hair?

The best product I have found (and I've tried hundreds!) is Boots pink curl cream about £2.00 a tub! It really is amazing!

franch · 16/03/2010 13:33

Thanks all - seagull I use olive oil on my DDs' hair but they're mixed race so it's a different texture entirely. I dilute it with water and spritz it onto their dry hair before I style it. Let me know how you use it and I'll give it a go - nothing to lose!

I'll try the Boots stuff too - thanks drinkmoretea. Like you I've experimented a lot so am reluctant to spend too much on something that might end up in the bin.

I do Curly Girl (no silicones, washing with conditioners) and have fine wavy to curly hair and second the pink curl stuff and also a watered down bit of water + non silicone conditioner, such as Original Source

Perhaps a tiny amount of jojoba oil as a serum/shine thing. Or James Brown non-silicone serum.

I used to do the expensive thing -- Kiehls Creme with Silk, Sebastian Potion No 9,.... but this method is the dogs' nads.

Thanks doris. My hair gets greasy quickly so I don't think no-poo would work for me, sadly.

ditto boots cheapy pink stuff. fab

dorisbonkers · 16/03/2010 20:26

franch you could try low poo, with bi-wekly washes with a non-laureth sulfate shampoo (like Boots Naked range)

I found I need to low-poo once every two weeks or the clag does mount up.

I think its more the no silicones and parabens and laureth sulfates that has really helped me. My curls are now super defined.

PoppityMoppityandCottontail · 16/03/2010 20:33

Another for Boots pink curl creme, and do try silicone free as Doris says, lots of shampoos/conditioners available now which fit a lo-poo and it makes a huge difference

kateecass · 16/03/2010 21:23

Yep, Naked doesn't work on greasy hair. I tried it. Maybe there is a low-poo shampoo that gets the grease out?? My hair needed washing the next day rather than every 2 with it.

Second the boots curl creme.

wwwdotcom · 17/03/2010 09:49

how do you all use the curl creme?

dorisbonkers · 17/03/2010 14:23

I used a very small amount, sometimes mixed with a 5p bit of Gianni (Whoever) Flirty Scrunchy gel (is that the stuff? It's in a pink tube) and aplly to wet hair, sort of clumping it to the hair, rather than combing it through. Then I 'plop' my hair in t-shirt (do a search on youtube for hair plopping) and let that absorb som more moisture, then leave to airdry.

wwwdotcom · 17/03/2010 14:48

thanks doris. Plopping on youtube
