Travel Wrap: high fashion or Lady Don?

roary · 15/03/2010 15:27

LTEC and others have made tempting noises about the Travel Wrap, which is both very expensive and potentially lovely...

I have been pondering this as a v late pregnancy/warm cozy new baby layer. But I just can't get my head its Lady Don implications. As I am (squeak) a Lady Don Jr I worry about this as most of my older female colleagues where a series of drapey cape like garments layered on top of each other, held together by brooches. They look appalling. Will I look Lady Don or still cool?

Lady Don I'm afraid. I do have something like a TravelWrap (natural coloured wool), and it is v useful, but not attractive. Super for expressing breastmilk under in the back of the car

dexter73 · 15/03/2010 15:34

I think Lady Don too I'm afraid. Nice for home but not for outside as you look like you are wearing a blanket (which is in fact what you are doing!).

traceybath · 15/03/2010 17:46

I think if you're very tall it could work. But it wouldn't work on me as only 5ft.

But if everytime you wore it you felt like a mad old lady I'd steer clear.

Its also nearly summer - ha ha!

LetThemEatCake · 15/03/2010 18:04

I don't know who Lady Don is but I reckon when in doubt. don't.

roary · 16/03/2010 11:29

LTEC, do you wear yours out and about?

A Lady Don is a female Oxbridge academic. Think many cape-like layers, sensible lace up shoes, and thick wooly tights.

I would be COZY if not glamorous. But my life's work is to resist Lady Don fashions of all varieties.

vinauchocolat · 16/03/2010 11:38

totally Lady Don

LetThemEatCake · 16/03/2010 12:09

yeah, I do roary. Usually over skinny jeans, boots and a fitted tee. And big sunnies!! Not at all like the Lady Don of which you speak. Bear in mind I am 5'10" and reasonably slim. Generally get told I look glamorous in it.

roary · 16/03/2010 12:11

See, that is what I was thinking - LTEC cannot possibly be Lady Don.

I am also tall and slim.

and hugely pregnant ;)

get a DKNY cosy cardigan instead

lighter weight and is versatile

has SLEEVES for starters

roary · 16/03/2010 12:19

oooh, loving the cosy cardigan! Does it come with lessons on how to tie it? ;)

Any idea on sizing?

OP posts:
mazzystartled · 16/03/2010 12:20

I think they are quite generous

There are videos on net-a-porter

It can't be Lady Don if it comes from net-a-porter.

(ted baker also do a v good rip off version for £70, good colours too)

LetThemEatCake · 16/03/2010 12:25

I also had the cosy cardigan - just sold it on ebay 2 weeks ago. Have never had a more irritating piece of clothing in my life.

mazzystartled · 16/03/2010 12:27

Oh I love 'em LETC

So long as you don't try to load the dishwasher when you're wearing it.

Can;t be more cumbersome than a big blanket, surely?

roary · 16/03/2010 12:32

It's like a Day to Night Barbie piece of clothing!! I used to want to own convertible clothes like D to N barbie.

It doesn't look too cumbersome if tied glamourously, thusly

But then I am the person who hates my Isabella Oliver wrap top because it is always leaving irritating gaps.

How does it compare in cumbersomeness to the big blanket? And what size were you, LTEC?

LetThemEatCake · 16/03/2010 12:32

different strokes eh ... I like the absence of sleeves on the TW as can just toss it off with a flick of the shoulder Darn cosy sleeves always getting caught on rings etc. Also - baby in sling - much easier to toss TW on and off over baby. With Cosy, wearing cosy over sling makes getting sling on and off a production. Wearing sling over cosy looks rubbish. It's a minefield, I tell you.

LetThemEatCake · 16/03/2010 12:32

I was P/S roary

mazzystartled · 16/03/2010 12:38

oh the IO wrap tops are a nightmare

i have never worn such an uncomfortable piece of clothing

roary · 16/03/2010 12:44

LTEC, I take it that's the smallest size? The net-a-porter sizes seem all over the place.

Is the fuschia too barbie? I like the navy but have a thing about 3/4 sleeves on cardigans. I get cold.

Mazzy, I hate my IO mat wrap top. HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT. Will be selling on Ebay when pregnancy over. I just can't seem to wrap it right, so I'm relieved that you can manage the DKNY cozy, which I think I might be in love with.

OP posts:
LetThemEatCake · 16/03/2010 12:48

roary I hated IO mat tops too

listen, no odds to me whether you opt for a TW or similar ... but take it from me (and VerityBrulee) those cosys are a faff. They are flappy if left open and yes, can look fab if tied correctly but I can almost guarantee that you won't have the time or inclination to be faffing about with wraps, knots and crossovers 5 or 6 times a day when bub arrives

for which I must add - good luck!! will you do an S&B birth announcement?

ps - yes, smallest size in cosy

VerityBrulee · 16/03/2010 13:00

Hi LTEC

Totally agree Cozies are a pain, I love the idea of them but only ever wear as a ballet wrap, but then have to untie it when I get in the car as the knot is too uncomfortable

If it's snuggly you are after I can highly recommend this Me and Em cashmere cadigan, I have barely taken it off since I got it

FrogintheField · 16/03/2010 16:43

I wear mine all the time. Out for dinner to v.posh place around my shoulders, in the barn under my jacket with my weelies on feeding my piglets, wrapped round my neck at pottery classes to keep the chill out, in the office when working, all the time, have even slept with it round my neck when I had a chest infection and felt rotten, they always look great and very understated becasue it's a natural fibre, I can honestly say it's the best £200 I ever spent. (I was devastated the other day when I almost fed it into my shredder!!)

dexter73 · 16/03/2010 19:24

Cozies were £39 at the DKNY shop at Bicester Village last time I went. They had loads of colours and a poster showing you how to tie them.

Zembo · 16/03/2010 19:58

I have both the TW and 3 of the DKNY cozies !

I wear the cozies for work mainly so no issues with kids and managing the material (of which there is a lot)

I'm tending to use the TW mostly at home in the evenings although have used it out and about occasionally when minus the kids. I'm short and slim - I think it still looks fine depending on how you wrap it...so love them all really!

roary · 17/03/2010 10:30

Well, if I can get me a cozy for £39 perhaps I need BOTH! LTEC and Verity, I take your points on cumbersomeness, and also I like the idea of being able to put it on top of the sling (finding something that was not a hideous two-headed monster coat to wear over my Ergo with DD was impossible). Not sure I'll be able to swing it as a fashion item but perhaps if I only wear one travel wrap and no brooches I will be fine!

I do love the look of the DKNY for work and later on but I can see how tying it repeatedly is not the most practical new baby solution.

LTEC, will indeed make an S and B announcement when baby comes, due on the 31 but DD was 16 days late so I am not holding my breath for an on-time delivery!
