No shampoo and no soap

What would happen if you just stopped using shampoo or soap (except for handwashing), and just used water for everything?
Has anyone tried it?

didn't the mad Dawn Porter do one of her improbably experiment-docs on that? (or was it just not washing at all...can't remember)
We do pretty much that for dd who is covered in eczema for a lot of the time, an odd bit of aqueous cream if she's lucky. She comes out clean enough

Don't think I'd recommend it for an adult, tho

neillybeag · 13/03/2010 22:32

hmmm - what was her verdict on it?
I'm very tempted to try it. I've been using just water on my face for years and wondered what would happen if I stopped using shampoo, and soap on my other bits.
I wonder whether dh would notice.
Hot water from a daily power shower should keep me as clean as soap, but without the soapy smell. I have no idea what a clean and fresh but unsoaped/shampooed human would smell like.

i don't use soap except to wash my hands. i have delicate skin and it's much better. stopped shampooing my hair for 5 weeks but it never got to the self-cleaning stage and was just too gross. from my research i think if you have curly hair that's difficult to manage, not using shampoo is good. not for straight hair. oh no.

Your bum armpits fanny and feet would smell really bad.

gigglewitch · 13/03/2010 22:52

you tell it like it is, bibbity

neillybeag · 13/03/2010 23:02

Did you wash your hair daily with just water warthog?

lol @ bum, armpits, fanny and feet. That sounds like the sort of refrain that I might hear coming from small boys in the back seat of the car.

Enough to put anyone off swimming in a public pool.

My sister has never used soap as an adult. She has a very slight smell but it is not a bad smell.

I did stop washing my hair when I was younger. It wass really, really greasy for a month, and then it stopped being greasy and was lovely. A few of my friends did the same and went through the month of grease. I started washing it again when I moved to London as the air is so grimy.

I would never wash my fanny with soap - I just think it is in an open invitation to thrush.

BitOfFun · 13/03/2010 23:30

I don't use soap on my delicate lady-parts, and I am reliably informed that I smell nice. Warm water is quite sufficient, and doesn't cause thrush.

I use aqueous cream in the shower, and don't use standard shampoo either. I washed my hair only with conditioner for a while, but have gone back to shampoo (kinda) now, but one from a health food shop that doesn't contain the usual harsh detergent Sodium Laureth Sulphate.

I don't stink, honestly.

yes i did neillybeag. but wasn't very nice. never got through the grease barrier. i think i just have very greasy hair!
