Have spent the evening dyeing.... Delighted with the results...

Dyed a pink cotton this colour and nearly style Gap blazer navy blue. It looks fab - the trim is still purply/pink as is the lining. I always loved the jacket and feel I may actually wear it now.

and have a load of black linen things that are 'refreshed' with velvet black. Seemed daft buying new black trousers and tops just because of fading rather than wear !

For those who have a few items they are bored with why not have a go ! Though had to buy the dye off Amazon as woolies is no more

I amvery interested in this! I have a favourite pair of black skinny trousers I need to dye as they have faded. How exactly do you go about the dying and is it messy please?

WingedVictory · 13/03/2010 10:19

I love Dylon, too! The best things I have done are DS's pooey vests (dyed navy blue to hide the stains), and also a yellow blanket, dyed with China Blue to produce a very lovely sage green.

WingedVictory · 13/03/2010 10:26

HalfTermHero, it can be done in the washing machine or a bucket, depending on the type of dye. Fo the bucket, you need gloves and an extra, lidded container in which to mix the dye with warm water (I use a passata bottle, poncey, I know, but it's a good shape). Oh, and salt.

If you do hand-dye in the bathtub, you can have a good scrub afterwards. However, jeans would probably be best done in the machine. In or local hardware shops, the machine dye is about a fiver, and dyes 500g of (dry) material to full colour.

For my blacks - I put a linen pair of trousers, 2 black tops, a shirt and skirt and dyed them black. So far more than the 500g recommended along with the black dye and salt. They look like brand new ! Delighted. Used the machine washable and it was great. No streaks or anything - let the machine do the work !

I dyed a pair of pale blue trousers I found on ebay with the Dylon jeans stuff and refreshed a pair of old Gap jeans. They came out a bit too royal blue for my liking, would have preferred a more indigo colour but the coverage was excellent. It was an all in one pack that had all the salt etc so you didn't even have to add anything extra. Very good VFM.

recently did my cream sofa that was looking tired and stained into a nice intense violet (i think it was called.) it really is lovely and family thought it was a whole new sofa, so really pleasing results there.

FabIsDoingPrettyWell · 13/03/2010 18:29

I dyed my white skirt black and it looks grey and awful.

laughterlines · 13/03/2010 20:40

Do remember though that some stitching will not take the dye

Results are usually brilliant though.

brimfull · 13/03/2010 20:43

I have dyed white linen stuff varoius colours..brillinat stuff.
Have also got naff looking top with white stitching still.

WingedVictory · 13/03/2010 22:24

Hi, Fab, it could be that there was too much fabric for the dye, or that the fabric wasn't suitable... But still a bummer.

Okay, I will stop sounding Stepfordy about Dylon now....

HalfTermHero · 13/03/2010 23:35

Thanks Wings for the info. I will have to try it. If you use your washing machine is it likely to damage the machine at all or cause subsequent wash loads to stain grey etc?

FabIsDoingPrettyWell · 14/03/2010 07:56

It was a short skirt so I think it must have been the fabric though DH thought it would be fine and he should know. Never mind, I will just have to buy a new one.

HTH - run your machine on empty with detergent after dyeing the clothes then do a dark wash next.

WingedVictory · 14/03/2010 18:02

Artificial fibres don't take the dye, which is why the stitching always remains the original colour, whether white or yellow or whatever. Seams are generally done in polyester thread (no doubt stronger and cheaper than cotton), which is what is meant by the label's "100% cotton, exclusive of trimmings".

HalfTermHero · 14/03/2010 22:26

Thanks Fab! Think I will be sorting those trousers out soon then. I can't find any even half way as nice in the shops and it seems wasteful to bin them just because they are faded in places.

trixymalixy · 15/03/2010 11:36

i always refresh my black jeans with the velvet black machine dye. you can buy it in the supermarket in the washing powder section normally, sometimes they have other colours too.
