How does your DS have his hair?

Round here there seems to be a choice of two haircuts for little boys:

  1. The Boden Boy anti-haircut

  2. standard short back & sides clipper cut.

DS1 (5) has recently discovered the Hoxton fin (think fairly short version, not big floppy quiffy version) and creates himself one in the bath whenever his hair is washed. He's asked if he can have his hair cut like this so it will always go in this style.

I've always had a bit of an inward shudder at little boys with 'hairstyles', but my overall parenting philosophy is to pick my battles, and really there's worse he could want to do. So shall I let him? He's not usually very comfortable in his skin and his self esteem is a bit low, so if a Hoxton fin would make him feel good, I'm inclined to go for it.

What are your boys' haircuts like? Anyone got a good Hoxton fin photo for me to take to the barbers?

Oh let him. There are many years ahead for him to have to confirm to hairstyle rules

misshardbroom · 10/03/2010 12:19

should add that I don't mean 'anti-haircut' in a negative way, I think it looks nice, it's just achieved by growing hair out rather than cutting it into a style. Or so I'm told.

Looking at the link, looks like I have one blond 'Boden Boy' though slightly shorter and tidier than the picture, one short back and sides clipper cut occaisionally with wax on the top like Daddys' and one comb over sweep going on with ringlets forming round the back as he has never had his hair cut at 15m.

The older 2 have different hair as they are both very different in face shape.

My 'Boden Boy' has a very broad forehead and wouldn't suit very short hair.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/03/2010 12:22

Although he did have a bit of a basin till last week, or 'bob' as hairdresser put it (as i had been cutting it) until she put layers into it and made it into a style. Looks lovely now.

SoupDragon · 10/03/2010 12:24

DSs (9 and 11) both have sonething like this only shorter at the back. They look achingly cool when they are straight from the salon!

meltedmarsbars · 10/03/2010 12:25

My ds currently has it TOO LONG! He won't have it cut so it is now longer than your Boden boy, but just as unkempt.

I'm sure the teachers hate it. His classmates like it - maybe because it shows the triumph of boy over mother with scissors?

Mine is waist-length so who am I to criticise?

misshardbroom · 10/03/2010 12:25

very nice indeed.

(still smiling at the thought of LOF's smallest DS & his comb-over!)

His hair is long but very fine and very straight

ginnny · 10/03/2010 12:33

Whats a Hoxton fin???
Mine have very short and spiky on top hairdos, but DS1 is now at the age when he wants something more trendy but he still has quite a chubby little face so I think the older styles he likes will look a bit silly on him.
DS2 doesn't care what his hair looks like - he just goes to the barbers for the free lollipop at the end

MillyR · 10/03/2010 13:27

DS has the anti hair-cut, similar to soup dragon's example. When he was about to start secondary school, DH took DS to the hairdressers and the usual hairdresser was not available. The replacement hairdresser misunderstood and cut DS's hair like this:

2.bp.blogspot.com/_NO2UOMMYKZ0/SJv4zlwGMJI/AAAAAAAAAsM/uB85xwl_eAw/s320/Mullet+Emo+Hair.jpg

DH was really annoyed and caused a massive scene in the hairdressers.

I would be concerned that the Hoxton Fin would involve styling every morning, and prefer haircuts that involve no work.

SoupDragon · 10/03/2010 17:13

LOL DD gave herself a mullet before Christmas. It had to be cut into a fabulously sharp layered bob - far too grown up on a 4 year old

thankfully, DS1 just has to have his hair "off the collar" for secondary. Well, it also has to be one natural colour but that's not a problem. Yet.

misshardbroom · 11/03/2010 09:25

ginnny, a Hoxton fin at its shortest would be like Fran Healy from Travis (rushing, so can't provide a link), longer versions seen on Beckham and boy band types. But we'd definitely be talking the short variety, don't think his headteacher would turn a blind eye to anything more dramatic!

I'd love my ds to have longer hair but it's just so thick it looks rubbish as it grow out, so it's shorter at the back and slightly longer on top. We live in a small town and the local barber is an older gentleman so the boys generally come out with side partings like something out of the famous five.

darkandstormy · 11/03/2010 12:20

short back and sides so neat, not really fussed on the Boden look can be a bit feral looking if too unkempt.

Ondine · 11/03/2010 12:49

It was a Boden cut for about a year, then I watched too much Mad Men and cut it like the little boy in this pic.

It looks unique in the masses of bodenesque floppy hair but not everyone's taste I admit.

izzybiz · 11/03/2010 12:52

My 17 month old Ds has the Boden look, as do a lot of little boys where we live! Gorgeous!

schroeder · 11/03/2010 13:01

Ondine-that's a flat top! excellent. I wish I could get my ds to have one. My brother had one in 1984; he thought he looked so sharp in his piano tie and Ben Elton sparkly suit.

My ds hates having his haircut we settle for short at the back a bit longer on the top every few months

andlipsticktoo · 11/03/2010 13:09

My 3 ds are, I would say, happily disheveled

though some would say they looked feral and unkempt!

frankenfanny · 11/03/2010 13:24

My 14 yr old has something like SoupDragon's example but cut clear of the collar for school. He is into the preppy look. My 4 yr old doesn't like his head being touched to say the least so he gets it cut when asleep, by a wobbly mum in the dark. Not a good look.

Ondine · 11/03/2010 13:25

Thanks schroeder - I didn't know what that style was called.

I just say DS has a retro hair cut, now I can say long live the flat top.... it'll come back into style one day i'm just at the start of the trend obviously .

frankenfanny · 11/03/2010 13:30

Meant to say, if yours a) willingly goes in a bath b) allows his hair to get washed c) actively wants a haircut then I think you are very lucky and should reward him! It doesn't really matter the style at that age.

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 11/03/2010 13:31

lol @ bobblehat. My DS(5) has really thick hair and we go to a small town barbers so short back and sides - he reminds me of an evacuee when he emerges . That's quickly replaced by the feral look though although I do try to drag a comb through it on some most mornings

bloomingnora · 11/03/2010 13:40

DH dried DS's hair to look like wilykat from thundercats the other day. Not a good look....

darkandstormy · 12/03/2010 09:50

sorry just re read my post re the word feral did not mean to sound harsh. Some kids with beautiful thick lovely coloured hair suit the boden look ie curly, red blonde etc.or kids who are mini rocker boy type kids.My ds has stringy mousey hair so would look a bit naff looks okay on some others the boden kid.Hope I did not offend ,depends on the kid iyswim
