Scaly flakey skin. Which (facial) moisturiser shall I buy?

My skin is awful at the moment and my current moisturiser isn't working. Recommendations for a new one please! I have £28 of boots points so up to that amount(though I normally only spend £6 or less)

Also is there a quick fix to stop my face looking like snakeskin?

mine is bad too.

i have reinvested in some Clarins £18 facewash/scrub. An extravagance for me yes, but it's really gentle, and i used it yrs ago to good effect. Also use Boots own Time Delay moisturiser, and it's pretty good.

luciemule · 09/03/2010 13:05

Nutrimetics moisturiser is fab. You can only buy it through an agent but as it's got apricot kernel oil, it's great for eczema/dry skin.

mackerel · 09/03/2010 13:06

clinique superdefense is supposed to be fab

MrsBadger · 09/03/2010 13:10

exfoliate!

get a muslin (baby one is fine) and use vigorously to take off your cleanser

theminniebobble · 09/03/2010 13:10

I'm the same. I feel as though I've tried everything on the market from cheap to expensive.

I have settled on Olay sensitive- just the cheap stuff combined with drinking gallons of water and regular, gentle exfoliation. Agree with piratecat, the Clarins one is good.

I also recommend slathering on the moisturiser and making sure you cleanse and moisturise properly each evening before bed.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 09/03/2010 13:13

I don't have 'real' money unfortunately lucie, just the boots points. Sounds really nice though.

Piratecat I wondered if I also needed to change my cleanser...

Clinique superdefence made my face burn

Oh whoops - forgot about the boots points thing.
It's not expensive though compared to some. I use mine twice a day and I have half a tub left since xmas. It's usually £11-13 but they always have offers on. The lady brings it round to my mum as she has it to. It cured my eczema and dry skin after 30 years!

purplepeony · 09/03/2010 13:38

I used to have facial eczema and stick to Clinique and REN- I like superdefence and youth surge- and in REN you can't beat their frankicense repair cream or the Omega 3 serum.

my skin is sensitie, oil and combo, i have all genres on my mush!

When i first had dd, the lovely Clarins lady said, it you've no time for anyhting else, this is the best you can do for your skin. So I leave it in the shower, and use it in the monrings. I have been using it 5 days now and i can see a difference.

Vivia · 09/03/2010 14:09

Chanel 'Gommage Microperle Eclat' would be perfect for you. It's an exfoliator with a difference - it's creamy soft with no 'grains' in it. Instead it's made of these little 'pearls' which burst when they are rubbed gently into the skin. The bursting effect causes exfoliation without you feeling it. Quite moisturizing too. It's £35. I follow it with Chanel Hydramax moisturizer, £45. I like to keep my skincare to the same brand if I find a good one because my dry, sensitive skin needs all the help it can get. I follow these up with Vitalumiere foundation, £38. Crucially, I use the cream instead of liquid or powder foundation. The cream is ultra hydrating.

Best cure for dry sensitive skin (esp if prone to dermatitis or bad flakiness) I have found is to drink lots of water, take good quality omega 3 capsules, DO NOT use a stripping cleanser (I like Boots sensitive expert cleansing/toning wipes) and use a simple moisturiser. You don't need to spend a lot of money and a moisturiser alone couldn't solve my dry skin probs. I'm also a fan of REN moisturisers so can't recommend a moisturiser found in Boots - but personally I'd spend points on omega 3 caps and Boots sensitive toner/cleanser wipes.

Surprise · 09/03/2010 16:23

Don't use cleanser. Wash your face with a soap-free cleansing bar (like Dove) and then rub gently with a roughish towel to take the dead skin off. Using olive oil works as well as any moisturiser if your skin is dry, although it doesn't smell quite so good! I use Boots own brand skin cream with vitamins a and e. Smells lovely. Lots of people comment on how good my skin looks, but all I do is what I mentioned above.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 09/03/2010 16:36

Is it eczema causing the flakes? Is it at all sore or red, or prone to getting sore?

I have very flaky dry skin on my face which is easily irritated by facial washes and unfamiliar moisturisers. I wash with aqueous cream and water, and then moisturise with Simple Derma Intensive Relief Cream which really helps to moisturise and diminish the appearance of flakes. Brilliant stuff.

Buda · 09/03/2010 16:45

The Simple range got a good write up in the papers a while ago. REadily available in Boots.

I find wipes ok for occasional use but not every day so would recommend any Simple cleanser and as others have suggested wipe off with a muslin - it's similar to the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish that way. Loads of water.
This would be a good moisturiser. It's a good range.

stickylittlefingers · 09/03/2010 16:54

I recently went particularly red and scaly in patches(mmm!) and found the muslin cloth to get the dry skin off then rubbing in bio oil on the dry patches worked well - it seemed to reduce the red sensitivity as well.

Generally I use the Boots own Time-delay at night, as they periodically give you 5 pounds off tokens for it, and it's not very scented and has a good night cream.

For day time, the Clarins quench range is lovely for my skin - it absorbs really well

PainSnail · 09/03/2010 18:31

This sounds a bit mad, but bear with me!

I get super dry, super sensitive and super flakey skin. Tried EVERYTHING. Strongest moisturisers known to man. Nothing worked.

But I've found the answer in the form of Clinique for Men M Lotion! I think its for use after shaving, but it really really good and doesn't smell at all manly.

It's this one (maybe ask the clinique counter at boots if you can have a free sample first?)

Good luck! I know your frustration.

bran · 09/03/2010 18:48

I swear by this for sore flaky skin. It leaves my skin very moisturised as well so I only use a moisturiser when the weather is particularly dry or windy. I apply it, leave for 5 mins, then take it off by rubbing with a face cloth or muslin dipped in warm water. Rinse out face cloth, soak in cold water and go over face again. It's the best thing I've ever used and my skin goes to bits again if I stop using it for more than a few days.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 10/03/2010 11:58

Ooh thanks for all of these Now I have to decide which to go for...

James I have exzema around my hairline but this is just flakey-I think caused by walking out in the cold a lot and changing my moisturiser (I have to change fairly often as my skin seems to get bored and go dull and spotty if I use the same one for more than 2 pots iyswim)-I could tell the new one wasn't heavy duty enough the first time I used it but kept using it anyway.

Bran that looks lovely, I've bookmarked it for future reference

Lucie which is yours? Also for future ref.

I'd recommend aqueous cream. You can use it as a cleanser, to wash with and as a moisturiser. Use an old flannel or muslin to exfoliate with as well, that should sort the flakiness out, and moisturise a couple of times a day.

I suffer from dry skin on my forehead and sides of my nose, and this really sorts it out. Not as much of a treat as the posh creams, but it works just as well (IMO!)
