Is it possible to be allergic to hold-ups?

I started wearing holdups last week and after two days noticed an itchy red rash around the top of my thighs where the tops of them would be. I've never had any allergies, so could this just be from the elastic or rubber on my skin? Has anyone else had this happen? I really liked them, much more comfy than tights - is it worth persevering with another brand? (I was using M&S Ladder resistant)

It happened to me egbok, but all was well when I got a bigger size. If they don't feel too tight, you could also try using some talcum powder to make sure the area is really dry and reduce friction.

It happened to me also. It was annoying having to go back to a suspender belt. I found the m&s lacy ones the least aggravating.

Cobblers - was thinking of switching to a suspender belt but have never worn one. Is it a practical & comfortable option for everyday? (I'd be wearing it with suits for work) I tried holdups to avoid anything cutting into my flabby waist - are suspender belts more comfy than the waistbands of tights?

My mum is allergic to something in the rubber (she is also allergic to rubber gloves...)

I think they use silicone / rubber which some people are sensitive to

WhyMeWhyNot · 27/02/2010 22:31

It's the latex part of the rubber.
I have the same problem.
You have to be really careful with latex allergy.
3 mins in a pair of rubber gloves and I'm in a/e for adrenalin jab.
Still it means I got a dishwasher

If anyone has since found a way to wear hold ups and avoid the allergic reaction to the rubber tops, I would be really interested to hear about it. I have given up wearing them as my thighs are so itchy and sore for about a week after wearing them! Did anyone else find that putting talc on beforehand helps?
Thanks!.

The same thing happens to me. When I take them & the next few days I itch like mad & get white welts. I think the sweat gets trapped between the silicone & the skin. I find the same problem with strapless bras & I live in a hot country.
I couldn't get on with suspended belts. I felt too scared they would fall down & from that everyone could see I was wearing suspenders. I preferred tights when I was on the UK as I didn't like having a cold bum.

I get this from time-to-time but as long as I don't wear hold-ups every day I am okay. I remember getting some hold-ups from Sock Shop many years ago that brought me up in deep red weals, but I find the M&S ones less aggravating. It is frustrating as I would much rather wear hold-ups to work in the summer but I end up wearing tights most days, and save the hold-ups for when I am going out with my DP. Wink

i get small blisters on occasion, but i think its fricton rather than allergy. like blisters after a long walk in the wrong shoes

MrsPeacockDidIt · 13/04/2014 13:25

Mine is definitely an allergy to the rubber. I made the mistake a forgot about it when I wore a strapless bra on my wedding day. The same rubber is used and I was bleeding by the end of the day.

Annoyingly I realised that M&S have started adding to their bra straps to stop them slipping. Yet another reason not to get bras from there !

I've been suffering with this for a while now. I used to wear suspenders but they are somewhat obvious when wearing 'snug' skirts! So onto Hold ups. Boots, for me seem to be the best, but M&S and now John Lewis, though really nice quality, are bringing up huge welts with blisters, leaving scars! I think it's something like MegBeth saying, it's possibly to do with the sweat. I'm fine if I'm standing/moving around all day; but if I sit for any period of time I get these welts!! Very painful.
