Advice needed please - bare footed or pop-socks? what is the biggest faux-par

Hiya, I start a new job Monday, have got my new shoes and a few trouser suits, went to the interview with tights under the trousers, not v comfy at all. I think it is time to discover the world of pop-socks , else go bare footed. Which one would more likely make you go euuux if you saw me. I should imagine my shoes would last longer with pop-socks, is it worth investing in a few good quality pairs or just cheap n cheerfull replaceable ones?

I have some comfortable but nice-looking opaque knee highs which I wear with trousers. I don't call them pop socks but I suspect that they are really. I hate the feel of bare feet in work shoes.

thanks llareggub, will look out for opaque one's, am showing my age now calling them pop-socks arnt I?

Dear God please step away from the pop socks.

GibbonInARibbon · 26/02/2010 08:53

Knee high are pop socks.

mummyplonk · 26/02/2010 08:56

new mantra whilst walking round shops today (dont say pop-socks, dont say pop-socks)

That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet

They will still be pop socks

Now, I'm pretty sure that the pop-socks I used to steal from my mother when I first started work were horrid and uncomfortable. These knee high ones are comfy. But it could be that the intervening 15 years have changed my perception.

If you do go for pop-socks knee-highs, get some really good quality opaque ones and look after them properly, like you would with good tights. They will last a long time. They are expensive but you will only need a few pairs. (Or depending on your shoes, you could go for long, fine-knit socks; I used to have some Falke ones that were good for work, almost as thin as knee-highs but made of merino I think, in charcoal grey and black.)

Cheap "disposable" ones look awful, awful, awful, especially if they are the thin kind that get covered in loads of tiny snags that look like little horizontal lines ... People seem to think that "nobody can see them" but of course that is not true.

Barefoot in shoes will just look odd and make people think your feet are probably sweaty and horrid.

Can I be a pedant and say that the biggest faux pas is misspelling faux pas. [pedant emoticon]

I wear knee highs under trousers on the rare occasions I wear trousers (concerts - trousers are my choir's uniform, and the only time I wear trousers is concerts). I found a rather snazzy pair of lacy ones that I thought were a good idea - if they were full of holes, the odd extra one wouldn't matter so much (not that anyone could see them).

This is the first time I have posted in style and beauty, and I suspect that using the word snazzy in reference to pop socks knee highs may be the biggest faux pas on this thread.

Thanks Dorathea, I will look for some q opaque ones then, am not even going near "silkies" again, I ended up with a hold up/tights mountain last time
