Childrenswear - what's missing?

Just wondering if anyone thinks there's a gap in the market (no pun intended!) or a certain style of children's/baby clothing at a certain price that isn't currently available?

I've read a coupe of threads bemoaning the lack of decent boyswear/ logo free clothing etc and just wondered what people would like to see more/ less of available on the market.

I can only speak about baby/toddler boyswear but yes, there's an absolute gap in the market for affordable, stylish clothing. Most boys clothes are either blue or brown. There is brighter stuff available but you have to really search for it and the brighter stuff tends to be covered in logos. Anything that's comfortable to wear that still looks good - it's either horrible jogging bottoms or really restrictive trousers with waistbands/zips/buttons designed to make them look like teenagers. My sister lives in France and they have lovely, affordable children's clothes shops which we seem to be completely missing here.

I totally agree, clothes in the UK for children are quite boring!! I have always noticed when travelling that the childrenswear are much more trendier and modern!!

getawiggleon · 24/02/2010 23:08

Thanks for feedback, ladies! I really appreciate it.

By brighter coloured boys things what colours would you like to see more of? I think red is great for boys but have on two different occasions heard Mums commenting that they thought it was a bit girly?

Any particular brands from overseas that made an impression??

I love red and stripes. Obviously lots of places do these online, just expensive!!

It has to be a proper BOLD red though, I love it multicolours are fab.

hobnob57 · 03/03/2010 20:18

Anything not pink/purple and with logos for girls please. Including shoes.

Fashionfun · 16/03/2010 15:28

Hi Ladies, I'm currently looking into exactly this kind of thing for a project that I'm working on. Would you mind taking a couple of minutes to fill in my questionnaire? It's all mutliple choice so shouldn't take any time.

Thank you!

Unisex toddler clothes.

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 16/03/2010 15:37

I always want brightly coloured unisex stuff for toddlers for cheap prices - most of the cheap stuff I can find is all pink and sparkly. I'd love to see less stuff with logos as well, I don't like them for boys or girls but some clothes are covered in them.

nappyaddict · 25/03/2010 22:45

I often see on here that people don't like the shop logo on their kids clothes. Is this even if it's small - for example on these Ted Baker clothes

on this cardigan 1

cardigan 2

jacket

or this John Rocha tshirt

or this Jasper Conran top

I think there is a huge gap in the market for traditional, non-logo children's clothes. I find it hard to find clothes for dd1 (6) which isn't too grown up, most of the younger stlye clothes only goes up to age 4-5 which is now too small for dd1.

I would like to be able to buy dungaree's for dd1 and traditional style dresses (not sparkly and pink). Also nice cardigains without logos and slightly longer (as they seem to ride up on dd2). I struggle with dd2 as she is very messy and most girls clothes seem to be light colours so brighter colours or browns would be good.

nappyaddict · 28/03/2010 23:59

Marne What do you consider to be too grown up? For example do you think denim jackets, skinny jeans, body warmers, leggings, cropped jackets/cardigans are appropriate or not?

Do you think colours like turquoise or red are too girly?

Marne · 29/03/2010 12:54

too grown up for a 6 year old

horrid rock chick

I don't like skinny jeans (not practical for dd1 anyway as she cant get them off to go to the loo), i have leather jackets, some denim jackets are ok but i don't buy them for the dd's.

I hate pink (there's just too much pink), Dd2 looks good in deep red's, browns and oranges, i dress her in denim dresses and trousers as i find stains come out of denim better than cotton. She also has a pair of dungarees from mothercare which she lives in.

Dd1 wears some boden (mainly tops), jeans (boy friend fit so she can pull them down to go to the loo) or longer tops with leggings, she has a few skirts but doesn't like wearing them.

I like Joules clothing, Boden, some Next (younger girls) and vertbaudet but i can't really afford to buy from these places so most of dd's clothes come from e-bay or car boot sales.

Marne · 29/03/2010 12:58

I would love to design my own children's clothes , i love dressing the girls up but its hard to find anything that looks nice and different from what every one else is wearing.

In our nearest town there are very little shops that do childrens clothes, we only have Next (which is where every one goes), BHS (which is only good for school clothes) and primark (ok for nursery clothes). Adams has closed and Mothercare has moved.

nappyaddict · 30/03/2010 12:29

What about this in brown

or this shrug is nice and bright.

Marne · 30/03/2010 20:29

I like the body warmer, also i love this cardigan, just a bit too expensive for me, i have been looking for a cardigan for dd2 for the summer and the joules one is the only one i can find that is long enough, dd2's tummy is a bit big for shorter style tops and cardigans.

I have also been looking for plain t-shirts or patterned for dd2 but they seem to come in packs of 2 or 3 which always contains a white one which is a waste of time on dd2 as she's too messy.

nappyaddict · 31/03/2010 02:12

You could tie die the white ones?

Tomten · 02/05/2010 18:51

Agree with not enough clothes with no logos and too many clothes that are trying to be too grown up for 5 year olds. There are shops that import clothes from Europe that are traditional and look like kid's clothes rather than like kids dressing up as adults! Polarn o Pyret (Sweden) or Cambridge Baby (Germany) both have a selection. The colours are very bright both for boys and girls greens and purples and lots of nice bright reds and yellows. The quality is also good. Any opinions on H&M? Was going to have a look at them next

linesandlines · 03/05/2010 00:33

Agree that Polarn O pyret is gorgeous. Wish we had one here.

Only goes up to age 5, but there's lots of non-logo stuff on this site: www.loveitloveitloveit.co.uk

linesandlines · 03/05/2010 00:35

Sorry, forgot to say, I like H&M - it does some really good coloured stuff, but it tends to be hit and miss - some seasons brilliant, others not great. John Lewis is also worth a look.

Tomten · 03/05/2010 13:50

Brilliant, thanks for that! Will check them out! That website does look very good

Tomten · 03/05/2010 13:54

Oh and check this one out this is where I normally get things www.cambridgebaby.co.uk it's a bit of a treck to Polarn o pyret for me as well!

linesandlines · 03/05/2010 23:45

Thanks Tomten, it looks like there's some lovely stuff to drool over there!

hellymelly · 03/05/2010 23:56

I hate logos on anything, and I think it is hard to get really lovely colours for children, all those primary colours can get rather wearing, and are not madly flattering on my very pale girls. To get soft dull greens, fleshy pinks, mustardy yellows etc means Bonpoint or at best Petit Bateau,so either v.v.expensive or pretty expensive. Also im possible to find lovely underwear that doesn't have horrible plasticky printed "stuff" on it apart from (again)petit bateau, which is also the only underwear I've bought that doesn't go shorter and wider in the wash.I spend a small fortune in Petit Bateau btw. Also very hard to get lovely tights and socks rather than horrible PINK and yet more PINK with bizarre cows/princesses/flowers on.
