am I harking back to decades past?

DH wants to go for his birthday but I have never been. Always have images in my mind of black tie affairs.

Help!

Only really know Covent Garden, and you can go in whatever you like. Lots of people come straight from work, there's always the odd one in black tie, but also a fair few in jeans.

Thanks WineBeforePearls we are going to the ROH as a special treat so will not wear jeans but if smartish is OK as opposed to evening dress then I can relax!

We went a few weeks ago and had seats in the Orchestra Stalls. We dressed semi-smart, jacket and tie for dh, long dress for me (never normally out of combats!).

That was about right for where we were, there was certainly no-one in jeans.

Bit of me also felt given what dh paid for the tickets I wanted to feel smarter for once!

Long dress? Do you mean like a proper evening dress or just a smart dress? i don't really do dresses so I am now slightly worried again!

Really, just dress smart and you'll be fine.

People might get dressed up in they've got a reception around it, like a corporate do after, but on the whole, just dress for a nice night out.

OK will do, thank you all for your quick replies

Black linen dress with a short white cardi over the top.

What are you going to?

JustMoon · 19/02/2010 20:59

The Gambler (never heard of it but supposedly is good?)

i have been to ROH in jeans, but it was the cheap seats.
I did see one woman in a real opera cloak, full length black velvet and gloves it looked ridiculous.

Last time we went to ROH the lovely lady seated next to me commented on how great it was to see some young people at the opera. I am 42, Dh 45 FFS.

JustMoon · 19/02/2010 21:24

It is DHs 40th so perhaps we will be the youngsters this time. I think he has been watching too much Popstar to Operastar, although saying that I amquite enjoying it too (want Darius to win!)

We usually jut go smart too, but have dresses up more when we had a do to go to afterwards as Mary said.

No opera cloak, but nowadays quite fancy some opera glasses
