Advice about a short sassy hairstyle?

I am 22 and have always had my hair at about my shoulders, see profile pics. It is easy to manage and pretty maintenance free. When I go out I prefer to blow it straight. After a tough few years things have settled a bit for me now and I have started socialising a bit more, made some new friends and begun to take a bit more pride in my appearance again. It is rare that I even think about my hair but when Victoria Beckham cut her hair short last year I absolutely loved it. I never cut it as my ex boyfriend like me long and it was not worth the rows it would have caused. However we have now split up for good and after adjusting to being single again I now feel I have the confidence to go for it. My mum has said she would treat me to the regular trims it will need when her hairdresser comes to do her hair.

I would love to just cut it short in one go but my sister chose to cut hers short in stages not in one go, what do you all think? Has anyone got any reasons that they think it better for me to keep it long and has anyone any other style ideas that they feel would suit me better?

Thanks

Going shorter in stages is a good idea to get used to the change. How about

How about something like this?

MarionCole · 17/02/2010 22:28

I had mine cropped short like VB last year from shoulder length. I did it in one go because I thought it would look a bit 'in-between'.

Silkflowersanne · 18/02/2010 20:06

Thanks Vesela, I fancy something a bit shorter.......any more ideas anyone?

i had my hair cut at the weekend. i went from shoulder length to a graduated bob...short at back, with long sides... it looked wrong. i went back 2 days later and ha dthe rest off. its now a short crop, and looks so much better. i googled imaged short hair styles to get some ideas.

The good thing about the first and last styles is that you can wear it smoother or mush it up with wax.

I went from very long to very short, the hairdresser was soooo excited and loved it, but did find I wanted to wear some make up, which I never usually bother with.

PoppityPing · 18/02/2010 22:34

bit longer, still funky

Yes, that's nice. My only advice having tried a few is to keep some wispy bits, I sometimes felt a bit boyish when I had a Mia style cut, which was the neatest of them all. Everyone's different though!

Silkflowersanne · 20/02/2010 13:32

Hi everyone,Thanks for all your advice , I have an appointment Wednesday and I am going to take some of the pics with me and see what the stylist says, she has allowed plenty of time and has assured me not to worry. I am so excited!! I will look out for any more ideas from anyone else before Wednesday and I will let you all know how it turns out!

Hiya - I've worn my hair very short for most of my adult life, apart from a couple of attempts to grow it. Having tried it both ways (as it were ) I can honestly say I so much prefer it short, so I would say go for it, all in one go. If you do it in stages you will forever be wondering if you have the 'right' haircut yet. (dicslaimer here - I should point out that I do have a pretty cavalier attitude towards my hair take a 'fuck it, it'll grow back' approach!)

As a PP mentioned though you might find that you need to re-think your make-up once it's cut. Your face is (obviously) very exposed and (on a bad day) you can feel a bit boyish (though sometimes this is nice if you're not in a girly mood!). I would suggest working on playing up your eyes - experiment with eyeliner especially.

Also, I find I wear different clothes with short hair - I don't feel like 'floaty' styles of clothing go with short hair and am more comfortable in strong colours. Also the neckline of your clothes can make a real difference. A slash or boat neck can look very striking, as can a polo neck (think Audrey Hepburn!).

I guess what I'm saying is, go for it, but don't be surprised if you go through a phase where your hair and make-up feel 'wrong'. You might take a little while to find a new style generally that suits. Good luck, and enjoy!

Oh - I also meant to say mess around with different hair products. A good wax makes the world of difference. Try Angelfish products (from Boots) and I find the Toni and Guy range good too.
