Aim: a kinda punky flapper.

Actual: hippy goth with a dress fixation.

Bobbiewickham · 16/02/2010 20:17

Well...bright red 20's bob.

Lots of black.
Lots of breton stripes.
Biker boots/jacket.
Fair amount of Vivienne Westwood.
Much more gap.

Is that a sig style?

MaineGirl · 16/02/2010 20:18

cheeryface, it does havea kind of 1950's feel if you have the wrong boots or shoes and no accessories, hence i spend loads on chunky beads and bracelets to bring it a bit more up todate. its really hard to get non a line skirts too so i feel your pain . i've found Debenhams, Monsoon and M&S the best but i'm fairly tall at 5'9"

AnyFucker · 16/02/2010 20:21

err, no I wouldn't tethersend, I am too old

the last time I went into town on a works do, a group of us (all 30-40+) got turned away

the excuse reason given was "it's just not your kind of scene...., best you don't come in ..."

howzabout that then ??

janeite · 16/02/2010 20:23

Bobbie - you sound fab.

I veer between:

1940s secretarial with pencil skirts etc;
1950s puffy skirts in which I have a tendency to look like a bit like a Gothic Mini Mouse;
silk dress and boots - sort of Land Girl-ish;
boring jeans and a mac for when I can't be bothered.

Magicglassesfairy · 16/02/2010 20:23

Er - Drab Quark.
Is that a style? I just tried on a new jacket and DP said it looked drab and I reminded him of Quark (that's a ferengi from Star Trek in case you're not sure) - but it would be OK for work.
Only if I was going to work in Deep Space Nine.

tethersend · 16/02/2010 20:27

I advise you to lower your standards, AnyFucker. The last club I went to years ago was literally pulling people in off the streets. Until it got raided after 10 minutes, then it was back to square one

ButterPie · 16/02/2010 20:27

I do get told that I have my own style, suppose it is a kind of hippy 70's kind of look, with a touch of the 50's housewife. I apparently look like I breastfeed

(I do, but that's not the point...)

EdgarAllenSnow · 16/02/2010 20:35

actually, the more time i spend on style and beauty, the more i realise that actually i have my own set of rules which i unconsciously or consciously obey about putting outfits together - i tend to dress in varying shades of the same one or two colours, and i have some strong rules

  1. no writing
  2. no images of people (why wear the face of another woman?)
  3. no geometric patterns (natural, flowery patterns ok)
  4. nothing that looks polyester (always amazes how many expensive items really are nasty polyester)

and what i wear is also governed by practicality - so

  1. no high necked dresses
  2. NO Long skirts/dresses or trousers that are very loose at the ankle (dog walks wil make the hem soaking wet)

i tend to wear vest, cardi/hoody & above knee length flared skirt. style: goth/boho/hippy thugh i like nice fabrics and like a well-tailored item, no market-stall crap. that basically means i don't buy many clothes.

eshermummy · 16/02/2010 20:38

In winter I veer between a toast style layered separates and knitwear thing and a more rocky/luxe-grungy skinny jeans/wetlook leggings and lots of black thing for evenings

In summer I tend to do lots of breton stripes/fitted t-shirts or a kind of nicole ritchie LA thing with maxi dresses, shorts and loose smocky tops and big sunnies.

TBH I tend to reinvent my "look" every season depending on what's out there that I like the look of.

I like to hold everything together with great shoes/boots (usualy flats) and bags and, in winter, a great coat.

I am a real accessories queen too - love scarves/hats/necklaces - the lot basically!

AnyFucker · 16/02/2010 20:41

TE...honestly, this was a right fucking dive

how old and knackered must I look

the doorpersons saw us approaching across the square, conferred, and decided no way are these gimmers coming in !

ForestFire · 16/02/2010 20:43

"I'd call my style urban classic. Usually neutral colours with a classic cut updated with a dramatic accessory. Usually in heels or ballerinas and always carry an Hermes bag. "

lol
this is a piss take - non?

tethersend · 16/02/2010 20:47

Ah, bollocks to 'em AnyFucker. Don't they know how much people in our age bracket can drink? Would've doubled the night's takings

janeite · 16/02/2010 20:49

Talking of Breton-style - does anybody want to find me a Breton-inspired top, suitable for ladies with norks?

AnyFucker · 16/02/2010 20:57

precisely TE

them young 'uns don't even drink

what do they do ? < naive >

err sorry janeite, I would say massive knockers precludes horizontal-striped top...sorry

wastwinsetandpearls · 16/02/2010 20:59

yes but I don't know what I would call it.

MarthaFarquhar · 16/02/2010 21:00

yes
it is "lady who works with offenders"
ie M&S frumpwear and shoes I can run in

SofaQueen · 16/02/2010 21:01

ForestFire, huh? That is the way I dress - is there a problem?

LetThemEatCake · 16/02/2010 21:02

SofaQueen there is not a problem

you sound gorgeous.

SixtyFootDoll · 16/02/2010 21:05

In my minds eye - surfy rock chick
To other people - scruffbag

janeite · 16/02/2010 21:08

They're not massive!

thatsnotmymonkey · 16/02/2010 21:09

goodness, sofaqueen you sound lovely, and you, esher and ltec and I have a very similar style i think. Lots of breton stripes, skinnies, converse and ballet flats day to day and then I am very fond of floral short silk dresses with knits and all sorts of legging type things for the eve. I covet TOAST and have a couple of bits from there, but alas I missed all the really good stuff in the sale!
I love all saints, zara and gap.

Cobblers · 16/02/2010 21:17

Just fallen out of a dustbin.
