What can I wear with my fab new coat???

Before Xmas I bought this rather wondrous coat. Now I have a posh - but funky - daytime do to go to and wondering what to wear under it. I'm thinking of leggings/thick black tights and a tunic dress. But do I just go for simple black or something equally graphic underneath??

I'm a tall 16 - shrinking widthwise - small boobs big belly long legs model rather than busty substance type.

I'd ideally like to wear something like this but a) may look obese b) may all be a bit much!

Deffo think too too much. How about

this

Cyb · 14/02/2010 21:03

Well you wont be wearing your coat all night so the underneath outfit has to be able to stand alone. I think the dress yuou linked too was too garish and peasanty. I would go for boring but slimming and classic trendy black. Tights (thick) not leggings. heels, some fab dress

cahu's idea good

Forestfire - I agree in that picture it does look most peculiar. But IRL it just looks like a bold print and the buttons are fab. Plus it just really suits me. Can't afford to buy trousers AND a top I don't think - also crops no good as I have FAT ankles which look okay as long as I show my thighs... Can't do massive heels as husband is slightly shorter than me, though I'd LOVE t0 - although when I wear heels people say "you look so massive and scary!" which is never quite the look I'm going for.

Agree on thick tights.

Wallis black dress looks very probable, though in fact it is a bit more boring than I hoped. But with fab necklace could be ok once coat gone.

Surely the dress has to be boring plain to avoid competition with the coat, which is quite a statement.

specialmagiclady · 16/02/2010 08:37

Have returned from shops and - oh dear me - having said "I can't afford this etc...." I have ended up buying THREE frocks. The black plain one, the pretty peasant one - NOT to go with the coat, just because it's divine and I'll wear it all the time and
this one which strikes just the right balance between being simple to go under the coat and still fabulous when the coat comes off

Also got these incredible shoes

I think the black frock will have to go back as, actually, it is pretty dull and doesn't do that much for me. Bought it to be sensible and for one (or both) of others to be taken back on orders from DH but he says it's just too boring and I should keep the other two. Bless him!
