Help! Wedding outfit needed for chubby new mum!

StepfordWeeble · 07/02/2010 16:35

I'm going to a cool and funky, non-traditional wedding in a couple of weeks' time - the type where the bride is wearing a designer number rather than a white gown.

BUT my wardrobe options are at an all time low. I had a baby 9 weeks ago and don't fit into the vast majority of my clothes and shamble around in my PJs and dressing gown the vast majority of the time. It's so long since I've shopped for normal clothes, let alone a wedding outfit, that I don't know where to begin.

To top that, my florist said to me yesterday "When are you having your baby? It seems like you have been pregnant forever" - umm, 9 weeks ago, I'm very much not pregnant anymore!!! To be fair I was wearing an enormous coat but still there's only so many times a girl's ego can take that kind of mistake...

I'm 5ft 2, probably a size 14 these days and will spend up to £150. Ideas desperately needed please!!

Okay, to get you lovely stylish ladies started, what about this?

Can you tell us a little about the wedding? Is it a country house or an art gallery? A dit down meal and dancing or campagne and nibbles with a pianist?

Will you be breastfeeding (not a loaded question, just wondering if they are any practical considerations)? Have you got slim upper arms and pretty ankles? etc.

And what sort of colouring are you?
Hair?
Skin tone?
Eye colour?

Are you long or short bodied? Long or short limbed or pretty much in proportion?

Congratulations on your new baby.

Swedey · 07/02/2010 17:28

dit sit
campagne champagne

gah

StepfordWeeble · 07/02/2010 17:53

Hi Swedey, and thanks!

It's in a rather grand town hall, followed by a party (with dancing and hog roast) in a venue in town.

I have nice ankles and decent legs (even if I do say so myself) but I'm not a fan of my upper arms. Oh, and my norks are enormous these days. I'm fairly evenly proportioned - a little long of back. Although given what has happened to my boobs, and my post-pregnancy tummy, I'm probably rather top heavy and there's a risk that anything which shows off my cleavage might show off a bit too much!

I'll probably take along a bottle or two (not least so that I can have some champagne!) but in an ideal world it would be great if I were able to breast feed.

Hugely appreciate your help!

Oh, and I have dark brown eyes, mid-brown hair, and have a pale olivey skin tone (having not been blessed with the touch of the sun for many a month).

So it sounds as though funky ankle boots or shoe boots- to draw attention to your ankles or legs and a funky warm-ish dress, to the knee or a bit above, perhaps knitted, but which would allow breastfeeding, might do it? And if you wear coloured tights you will draw attention to your legs, again.

Actually, I just looked at your link, it would appear you are not looking for something quite so warm as that...

Swedey · 07/02/2010 19:14

I'm just chucking a few things at you now.

I know it's over budget, but would you look marvellous in this? It would mask the milky boobs and show off your lovely legs

Without seeing you, I'm guessing you don't want something without waist/ribcage definition..... as it will prob make you look bigger than you really are?

Jaeger have a lovely frilled neck dress long sleeved in black (how do you feel about black and some lovely coloured shoes and accessories?) and also short sleeved in russet and olive silk but I can't get their website to load. I'll try again in a short while.

This green one from Coast looks as though it might have ruched fabric in all the right places to make you feel a bit more fitted.

It's really hard shopping for someone you can't see.

Ivykaty44 · 07/02/2010 19:15

this may distract from your upper body, show of your legs and keep you warm fro the hof roast.

Have you looked on lk bennett

A lovely dress and coat called harlow or a dress called amour - sorry - their new website doesn't let me link directly to items.

tethersend · 07/02/2010 19:36

What about something like this with high bright coloured shoes and accessories?

Clure · 07/02/2010 20:22

I love this
this could be flattering
with a bolero cardi comes in variety of colours to hide arms
the turquoise coast dress that swedey linked too would look fab
a bit funky with opaques and high shoe boots
this similar

tethersend · 07/02/2010 20:35

That All saints has some nice dresses, Clure... I like this one for the OP...

janeite · 07/02/2010 20:35

I am a similar size to you - 5'2" and a size 12. I am an hourglass-ish - what are you? The reason I'm saying this is that the only one of the links that would look anything like okay on me is the one in your original OP BUT Kaliko stuff can be v long and may well look frumpy for that reason.

Gorgeous AND in the sale

Swedey · 07/02/2010 20:49

janeite - I adore that Mint Velvet one. I am v tempted to buy it to wear over jeans. Thank you for linking.

Elemental · 07/02/2010 21:05

You sound rather similar to me, Weeble (except with better legs!).

I think the dress you linked to is the nicest one on the thread, really pretty.

I've got this for wedding coming up, plus turquoise cardi -

janeite · 07/02/2010 21:08

I tried the Mint Velvet one on yesterday and it is lovely but a ten was a bit snug across the bust and they hadn't got a 12. A size 12 top that I tried on there was too big though. Might order the dress in a 12, as I think it could still look okay a bit big. What do you think?

Swedey · 07/02/2010 21:14

Janeite - Yes, I think it will look okay a bit big. How long was it, that dress?

You don't have a mint velvet promotion code do you by any chance?

janeite · 07/02/2010 21:16

It was just over the knee (I am 5'2"). No promotion code, sorry.

StepfordWeeble · 07/02/2010 21:38

Wow! I love MN! Step away for a spot of Antiques Roadshow and Lark Rise (yes I'm that cool) and come back to 21 responses!

I'm going to wade through and hopefully will find the perfect outfit...
